There are plenty of self-improvement and career-advice books available, however, you'll find few targeted to the engineer profession. This book fixes that shortfall and does it superbly.

A Handy Career Guide for Young Engineers

I just finished reading the book and was very impressed. The author managed to put together the very essentials for a successful engineering career. Having been practicing as a Civil Engineer for just over eight years, I can see some of the lessons I learned through setbacks and frustrations clearly explained in the book. I do wish I had this book at the very beginning of my career-it could have saved me some time. However, I am still glad I got the book. It not only illustrates many important principles that I just start to get a sense of, but also organizes them in such a logical way that I believe is especially appealing to most engineers. Still early in my career, I can't say for the more experienced group how this book will benefit them. But this is a chart for younger engineers who aspire to explore the ocean of opportunities and find their dream land. I am definitely recommending this book to my friends and colleagues.

You Don't Have to Be An Engineer to Benefit From This Book

Don't let the title fool you! You might believe you need to be an engineer to read and benefit from this book but nothing could be further from the truth. The author, Anthony Fasano, was first trained as an engineer but early in his career he noticed that his skill as an engineer was not the only criteria used to measure his success.
He realized that the non-technical skills such as how to find a good mentor, how to be an effective leader, goal setting skills, organizational skills, how to become an effective communicator and learning how to network were also very important to his success and these topics were not covered in most engineering colleges.
Anthony discovered that the more he concentrated on developing these soft skills the faster his corporate career advanced.
Helping his fellow engineers excel in these skills became a passion for Anthony so he invested the time into becoming a business coach as well as an engineer. This book may have been original written to help only engineers advance up the corporate ladder but I believe that the tips, tools and strategies discussed in this book would work equally well for most technically focused professional such as architects or accountants.
