Simple breakdown of what works!

Its a book that contains what you need to know and nothing else, which I think is a good thing. However, I think that it could have been better at explaining the mechanics behing the methods than it is. But I would definitly buy this book again!

Kracauer was an important film critic in Weimar Germany. A Jew, he escaped the rise of Nazism, fleeing to Paris in 1933. Later, in anguish after Benjamin's suicide, he made his way to New York, where he remained until his death in 1966. He wrote From Caligari to Hitler while working as a "special assistant" to the curator of the Museum of Modern Art's film division. He was also on the editorial board of Bollingen Series. Despite many critiques of its attempt to link movies to historical outcomes, From Caligari to Hitler remains Kracauer's best-known and most influential book, and a seminal work in the study of film. Siegfried Kracauer (1889-1966) was a film critic and independent film historian and theorist. He is the author of "The Mass Ornament" and "A Theory of Film: The Redemption of Physical Reality", edited by Miriam Bratu Hansen (Princeton). Leonardo Quaresima is Professor of Film History and Criticism and Director of Cinema Studies at the University of Udine, Italy.

Having owned the previous edition of this flawed classic, written by Siegfried Kracauer, the brilliant Weimar era critic, during his American exile in World War II, I hesitated to buy this new edition. Now I am glad I did. The Italian film scholar Leonardo Quaresima is one of the major authorities on Weimar era cinema, but unfortunately little of his work has been translated into English. His "Introduction to the 2004 edition" is more than that--it is a major essay on Kracauer as a film critic, indispensable for anyone with more than a casual interest in the period. Abundantly footnoted, it offers a sober critical assessment of CALIGARI TO HITLER, discussing its gestation, its sources, its relationship to Kracauer's earlier film criticism, and its methodological premises, indebted to fellow German Jewish exile Erwin Panofsky's iconology.

George Robert Gissing (22 November 1857 – 28 December 1903) was an English novelist who published 23 novels between 1880 and 1903. Gissing also worked as a teacher and tutor throughout his life. He published his first novel, Workers in the Dawn, in 1880. His best known novels, which are published in modern editions, include The Nether World (1889), New Grub Street (1891), and The Odd Women (1893).

Reflections about Life in Solitary Retirement

The Private Papers of Henry Ryecroft by George Gissing is part novel, part
autobiography and partly a book of brief essays or reflections on various subjects.
The book was published in 1903, the year that Gissing died. It presents a mellowed
cynical author who after a difficult life spent mostly in London is given a legacy of an
annual annuity which enables him to retire in solitude to a country cottage in Devon
county, England. Here he writes down his reflections ranging from the philosophical
meaning of life to comments on simple daily life. There is much about reading, books and
authors (Holbrook Jackson in his The Anatomy of Bibliomania has many references to
George Gissing). There are comments about nature walks in the country, memories of
past events in London, visits to special places. There is discussion of English culture,
customs and even of culinary arts. Gissing was not a Christian but in this book he shares a
generally positive view of the influence of Christianity on England. He had in his own life
also found solace in the Stoic philosophers, particularly Marcus Aurelius. My own
personal copy of this book is the Oxford University Press 1987 paperback edition in their
World's Classics series, with editorial notes by Mark Storey. I first read the volume late
in 1990 as I was looking forward to my own gradual retirement to small town life. I have
just read it again in early January 2004 with as much pleasure as I first read it.

About the Author

David Taylor is Chief Pharmacist at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, Professor of Psychopharmacology at King’s College London, and Pharmacy Lead for the UK Mental Health Research Network. The lead author of all editions of The Maudsley Prescribing Guidelines, Professor Taylor is the author of several other texts and editor of Therapeutic Advances in Psychopharmacology.

Carol Paton is Chief Pharmacist at Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust, London: she is also joint Head of the Prescribing Observatory for Mental Health and an Honorary Research Fellow at Imperial College London.

Shitij Kapur is Professor of Schizophrenia, Imaging and Therapeutics and the Dean and Head of School at the Institute of Psychiatry, King's College London.

Benchmark book. Belongs with Stahl's prescriber guidelines.

Great book. Complements Stahl's Prescriber's Guide very well. Does have some odd moments, however.

1. Says on page 16 that "clozapine and quetiapine are 'fully' atypical, seemingly having no propensity whatever for EPS." Tell that to all the people I have given akathisia to from quetiapine.

2. Says on page 28 that 10 mg per day of olanzapine is an optimum dose. Not in my experience. But, of course, I am as susceptible to bias as anyone else. Says on page 52 that the effective dose range for olanzapine is 20 to 40 mg per day.

3. Says on page 102 that the signs and symptoms of NMS are fever, diaphoresis, rigidity, confusion, fluctuating LOC, fluctuating blood pressure, tachycardia, elevated CK, leukocytosis, altered liver function tests. The clinical findings are the same as for SS, therefore. The NEJM published a review article about SS. (352:11, March 17, 2005). It said that SS caused mydriasis, increased bowel sounds, increased muscle tone, hyperreflexia and agitation. It said that NMS did not affect the pupils, caused decreased bowel sounds, lead pipe rigidity, decreased reflexes and stupor. I know it is not a book about clinical signs, but still.

Excellent book for budding and professional photographers!

I first came across Tamara Lackey via her Creative Live session which gave me lots of information, a good dose of inspiration and a feeling of wanting more. I started following her and was able to attend one of her workshops which did not disappoint. While I learned a lot during the intense 3 day workshop, I know there's a lot more to learn so I pre-ordered this book back in Oct. Finally got my copy a week ago and I finished the book in one seating. It's like a good novel that you just can't put down except instead of fiction, I am getting loads of very good information from one of the best creative/business professional in the industry.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is just starting out to someone who is already in the thick of their photography career. Tamara breaks it down to the reader in a way that only she can, with wit and common sense that makes her so relatable. The book covers a spectrum of topics from portrait photography essentials, gears, prepping for the shoot, connecting with subjects, location scouting, lighting, basic composition and posing, and even the basics of setting up your own studio. It is a very practical reference book that focuses on the day to day realities of a working photographer and not so much of the technical literature that some authors tend to focus on.

Definitely a good investment!

Tamara Lackey writes the best books available for children's photography.

I am a big fan of Tamara Lackey. I've read her book "The Art of Children's Portrait Photography" which contained a wonderful dialogue on the phycology of children and the different types of personalities they have and how to work with them. Her method is the best I have ever seen. I also watched her CreativeLive workshop on the same topic, which allowed me to watch her in action and learn even more. I then attended her photography workshop in Bar Harbor Maine, which had half a day dedicated to the business side of running a photography. It was intense and amazing and you got a very clear idea of how Tamara runs her studio and all that is involved in it. The entire workshop was amazing and worth every penny.

I was always left wishing she had a book out there with LOTS of color photographs, because I am so inspired by her photos. Enter "Envisioning Family" an incredible book that amasses so much information it will leave your head spinning, in a good way. She gets personal and talks about what family really means to her and how her own children have effected her photograph. It contains a nice breakdown of how she works (shooting JPG! *GASP* When you get it right in camera you don't have to shoot RAW, though I still do because my exposure can sometimes be off a smidgen with those moving kids) and what lens's she uses and why. You learn all about how she works and why she works the way that she does.

This book applies to any sort of photography that has you photographing people outside and in there homes (and in the studio) so its really a phenomenal book for ANY photographer not just children and families.

Another key part of the book is just that, families. It's a lot more difficult to juggle getting the shot when you have Mom, Dad and three siblings vs. just a cute kid playing in the grass. The book covers how to approach the family and how to get the shots you want with the motion you want (naturally happy smiling faces!).

This book was everything I expected, plus more.

Lackey opens with two chapters explaining a bit about the history of what we consider "the family unit." She also touches on views of various family networks around the world. Her personal experiences--especially those of adoption--are explained as she weaves her views about the ever-evolving redefinition of what we call "family."

Equipment and studio space considerations and explanations are next discusses. Lackey describes her kit and studio, succinctly telling the reader what her options are and why she selected what she did. Fantastic terrorism story

The idea that we have terrorists actually camping out in our country and waiting to be "activated" is probably unthinkable to many people but after what happened with 9/11, it shouldn't be. While not a light topic, I enjoy reading these types of stories because they get my heart rate going and author Roger Hayden definitely did this for me with his latest, "Sleeper Cell". The story of FBI agent, Craig Davis, who ends up on the trail of a sleeper cell within the U.S. His superiors close the case and he pursues the terrorists on his own, with the help of his partner. This was a super intense read that I found both well written and incredibly plausible. Definitely recommend. I received this product for free or at a reduced price in exchange for my honest review.

This book is as good as the first one and keeps the sotry going. Being held prisoner in Detroit of all places and now to get the nephew who wants nothing to do with any of them on each side. You have to read to see what happens next. FBI agent Craig Davis does not believe they have his family as they say they do but can he be sure? This is the second part of the story.

A Wonderful Classic, Great for Children With A Sense Of Adventure

This is a cherished book from my childhood which I lost during one of my many moves. Finally I am re-aquainted with this modern classic and after reading it again, have fallen in love with its charms again.

It is a beautiful story that keeps my nieces and nephews enthralled everytime I read a chapter to them.
