Reilly, the pedal-to-the-metal action novelist from Australia, returns here with yet another inelegant yet oddly invigorating rip-snorter about what else world domination. The setting this time is Area 7, a top-secret military outpost in the barren outback of Utah where government scientists are trying to perfect a new vaccine that will protect Americans from the Sinovirus, a deadly disease invented by the Chinese to kill everyone on Earth except themselves. A rogue air force general, the evil Caesar Russell, has other plans, however. During a visit by the president of the United States, Russell and his band of elite mercenaries capture Area 7. Their aim: kill the president, take over the country and use the Sinovirus to poison all but members of the white race. But Marine Capt. Shane Schofield isn't going to let that happen. With his usual mix of unflagging bravery and superhuman strength Schofield starred in Reilly's 1999 American debut Ice Station the relentless Marine and his tight group of highly competent sidekicks battle Russell on land, water and in space. As is Reilly's style, the action moves at a scenery-blurring pace, and his third novel (following last year's Temple) can make for exhausting reading. He employs just about every tactic both clever and crude to keep the suspense afloat. Character development is nil, and dialogue is at times comic-strip bad. Yet the sheer frenzy of Reilly's approach can inspire awe. How many heroes, after all, can kill an enemy aboard the space shuttle in outer space, then return to earth and dispatch another foe by pushing him into a pool full of meat-eating Komodo dragons all over the course of less than an hour? Capt. Shane Scofield hero of Reilly's first novel, Ice Station has been assigned to guard the President on his helicopter journey to the Nevada desert, where he will conduct a routine inspection of air force bases. Of special interest is the high-security zone, Area 7, wherein Gen. Caesar Russell lurks. Having turned rogue, Russell plans to destroy the United States and sics his elite forces on the President. If he dies, a microchip in his heart will trigger the explosion of nuclear bombs planted by Russell throughout the United States. Scofield, of course, is the man to foil the evil plot and save the day. The action is nonstop and includes shootouts, crazed convicts, wild animals, and, in an eerily timely subplot, a new strain of racially selective biological warfare that has been developed at Area 7. Australia's Reilly punches his way onto bookstore and library shelves with another action-packed adventure that is long on chases, fisticuffs, breathless dialogue, and gunplay and short on character development and literary finesse. Shane Scofield is a guard on the presidential helicopter; during an inspection of a top-secret military base called Area 7, an evil genius commandeers the base and unleashes a dastardly plan that could destroy the U.S.--unless, of course, Scofield somehow manages to stop him. Fans of the Die Hard movies have seen all this before (although it should be noted that Scofield has none of John McClane's vulnerability and precious little of his wit). But for those who like uncluttered thrillers propelled by action and not much else, this is actually a pretty good yarn. Reilly knows how to get a story rolling downhill, and his narrative snowball definitely packs a wallop. Recommend this one to fans of Cussler, Clancy, and other plot-driven thriller writers. If you like his writing style and you like over-the-top

If you like his writing style and you like over-the-top, unrealistic action movies, you will love his books. I really enjoyed Ice Station much like a palate cleanser after reading one of the best series I've ever read. It helped me get a reset so I could enjoy other books that weren't as great as the previous series. But when I bought this book, I quickly realized what the first book had been - a diversion.
The protagonist is supposed to be modeled after Tom Cruise and feels like a Marine version of the Mission Impossible character mixed with Superman. There's a rather unique view of American culture and military and politics that I find humorous and entertaining, but the biggest thing you need to be okay with if you will enjoy these books is reading through back-to-back action sequences that seek to rival each other without regard for physics, reality, or probability. I would compare many of his action scenes to the scene in Die Hard featuring a motorcycle being used to take out a helicopter. If you enjoy that type of cheesy action movie approach, you will LOVE his books.
Also there is some inconsistency, for example "(__) is the most elite unit in the world...." and ten pages later "Oh no, it's (__), the most elite unit in the world..." and then "OMG, the French Air Force, they are the most elite unit in the world!" ...

Yes yes YES. Matt Reilly delivers, and far better than any action movie!

I love Matthew Reilly's writing--the fast-paced action, the settings, the situations and the plot twists and, yes, the characters too. Even Reilly himself admitted that he's in this game to write about action and adventure, and if character development has to get axed as a result, then so be it. But for me, that honestly isn't the case. Getting to see Shane Schofield back in action, along with Libby Gant and Gena "Mother" Newman, as well as learn a bit more about their backstories, was great.
And the setting - a top secret military base in the middle of the American desert - complete with a map which gets updated at the beginning of each "confrontation" - is SO much fun to pore over and try to guess what will happen next. A bit implausible at times (yet never unrealistic) and a very liberal use of exclamation points in the narrative, sure. But it's so much FUN and far better than any action movie out there (in fact, I really wish his books would get made into movies, but then again, books are always better.)
I thoroughly enjoyed this second book of Matt Reilly's (that I have read) and can't wait to read more. Bravo!

Love all Matthew Reilly's books, but they aren't for everyone

It's hard to review books honestly because different people have different taste and interest in books..I, personally have read every book by Matthew Reilly and I like all of them equally..his writing is extremely fast paced, very graphic and chock full of swearing..but I dont really mind that, personally..Sean Mangan reads all of Matthew's books very well and changes his ton of voice depending upon the tempo overall I would definitely get any Matthew Reilly book on audio
