Before long, the Cartaginians had been decisively smashed, paving the way for Rome to become the dominant naval power in the Mediterranean for the next seven centuries. This is the story of the design, development and operation of the Republican Roman warship in the age of the conquest of the Mediterranean, from the first Roman naval adventure of 394 BC and the Punic Wars, to Pompey's operations against the Cilician Pirates and Caesar's victorious naval campaigns in Armorica, concluding with the consolidation of the Mediterranean Sea as Mare Nostrum with the battle of Actium in 31 BC. Archaeological photography, including those of exciting new finds, such as the Roman warship rostra (rams) found in the Aegates Islands, accompany lavish artistic reconstructions in illustrating the ships of the first Roman navy.

About the Author
Dr Raffaele D'Amato is an experienced Turin-based researcher of the ancient and medieval military worlds. After achieving his first PhD in Romano-Byzantine Law, and having collaborated with the University of Athens, he gained a second doctorate in Roman military archaeology. He currently works as vice-head of the Laboratory of the Danubian Provinces at the University of Ferrara, under Professor Livio Zerbini. The author lives in Frossasco, Italy.

Good overview and primer despite some glitches

This title provides a good and relatively comprehensive overview of Rome’s navies during the Republic, from its very beginning (allegedly in 509 BC) until the time when Augustus reorganised the navy and created the Imperial fleets and squadrons in 27 BC. As usual, and given the amount of ground to cover, one should not expect too much detail from a 48 pages booklet because there simply is not enough space to be comprehensive. The book’s structure and the various sections that make it up contain – for me at least - just about the right level of detail and information that I was expecting to find in such a title. There are however a few glitches across the book

The first section (“Historical Background”) is in fact a short summary of what is known of the Roman navy up to the eve of the First Punic War, in other words, not a great deal. The author has chosen to blend the traditional opinion with regards to the Romans and their Navy – that the Roman Navy was initially small and mostly used for costal defence and piracy – with another thesis that sees it growing and expanding, mainly by interpreting what is known of the treaties between Rome and Carthage before 264 BC. Regardless of whether one agrees or not, the point is rather well made. One allegation I found a bit surprising and sweeping, however, was the statement that (Italian) Greeks “were rather mediocre fighters on land” during the fourth century BC.

The second section presents “Roman ships and fleets”, with descriptions for each of the main types of warships, from the smallest to the largest. Also included are useful little pieces on construction and on transport ships. Here again, there are few minor glitches. For instance, the text accompanying the plates of a Roman quinquereme and a Roman trireme state that they could, respectively, embark 200 and 120 legionaries each.
Given the size of these ships where space as very much at a premium, the numbers seem inflated. Besides, the later number is generally attributed to Roman quinqueremes whereas triremes do not seem to have embarked more than fifty or sixty marines. The author does however make an interesting point when drawing from Morisson and Gardiner (The Age of the Galley) and assuming that Roman “threes” and “fives” were larger than their Hellenistic and Carthaginian equivalents. This is possible and even probable, although I am not quite sure this has been verified through naval archaeology. This would indeed have allowed them to have a larger complement of marines on board, although not as large as suggested.

The other sections of the book are more or less those that can be expected, including something on tactics and armament, with a piece of the Roman “corvus” for instance, and a few pages of the rowing system. There was one exception however. I did not find anything on ships’ performances, whether speed, limited seaworthiness or the need they had to replenish their water supply every day or, at most, every other day.

Another interesting part that takes up a third of the book is the section dealing with a selection of campaigns. This is where the illustrator has come up with some of his most vivid and impressive plates (this does not mean, by the way, that the others are not good!). The selection of campaigns is an interesting one. It includes Pompey’s campaign against the Cilician pirates, with a rather gorgeous plate of legionaries landing and forming up in testudo formation against largely helpless unarmoured pirates. Also included is Caesar’s naval campaign against the Venetes in Gaul (and not the Venetians of Venise). Here again, there are a few glitches. For instance, Rome did not require Carthage to abandon Sardinia as part of the terms of the treaty ending the First Punic War, although it took advantage of the Carthaginians’ war against their mercenaries to occupy the island a few years later. Also a bit surprising (simply because I had not seen this before or read anything about it) was the depiction of Roman marines during the first Punic War (the plate on the battle of the Aegate Islands) and the Second Punic War (the plates on the siege of Syracuse) wearing some form of quilted armour instead of mail or leather. The main point of this section, however, is that author and illustrator have made the effort to select “original” campaigns and battle scenes rather than, for instance, the more “usual” scenes of Actium.

Another point, already noted by another reviewer, is the interesting set of photos of ship rams presented in this book. My final remark will be about the bibliography which, while perhaps not comprehensive, does contain more than enough for anyone wanting to go further. Four stars for a good title, despite the few glitches.

Great as Always

As always this book is very fun to flip through, and is a great conversation starter when sitting out on a coffee table. I now own all 4 of the years and have yet to be disappointed.

Maybe it is just me, but I do feel like this year's book has more interactive graphics than the previous versions. A handful of the visualizations are much more fun if you go to the website and play with them, but to the author's credit he still makes all of them very informative just via one snapshot.

Rabins, MD, MPH, is a professor of the practice in the Erickson School of Aging Management Services at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. He was the founding director of the geriatric psychiatry program and the first holder of the Richman Family Professorship of Alzheimer Disease and Related Disorders in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

A beloved member of our family has recently been diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. We first heard about THE 36-HOUR DAY from friends who also have a family member coping with that terrible diagnosis. Then a neurologist recommended the book to us. It turns out to be a life-saver, especially for caregivers who must shoulder so much responsibility, physically but also emotionally. So I cannot recommend this book highly enough for anyone in a similar circumstance. It is becoming our family's "Bible" and a much needed resource for answers to difficult questions, reassurances about oftentimes confusing behaviors, helpful advice in so many aspects of caregiving (e.g. getting outside help, combativeness, financial worries), and a source of simple but vital encouragement. If you are, like my family, facing a future having to care for someone you love who has Alzheimer's or some other form of dementia, you will want a copy of this book!

Bordo argues that anorexia nervosa and bulimia are logical, if extreme, manifestations of anxieties and fantasies fostered by a culture that worships the slender, fit body as a symbol of "virile" mastery over bodily desires. In her diagnosis, hysteria, anorexia and agoraphobia "develop out of the practice of femininity itself"; the female is defined by society as a passive, primitive object, while the male is seen as an active, conscious, striving subject. This philosophy professor at Le Moyne College in New York views women's addiction to plastic surgery, and both men's and women's body fetishism, in terms of a consumerist culture that attempts to deny inevitable bodily decay and death. Elsewhere in these brilliant, scholarly yet accessible essays, she analyzes images of men and women in advertisements, interprets the current abortion debate as an assault on the personhood of women and charts pop star Madonna's metamorphosis from voluptuous rebel to slender, taut, muscular icon. In dense, challenging, subtly argued philosophical essays, Bordo (Philosophy/LeMoyne College; The Flight to Objectivity, 1987- -not reviewed) offers a postmodern, poststructuralist feminist interpretation of the female body as a cultural construction in Western society, emphasizing eating disorders, reproductive issues, and the philosophical background. Many of the problems and ideas of contemporary Western society, says Bordo, derive from the ineluctable mind/body dualism of Plato, restated by Descartes. From the viewpoint of feminist theory (of which the author offers a useful history and critique), women have been identified with the body, which itself has been characterized as an alien, instinctual, threatening, passive, and false self in which the true self--the active and manly mind/soul- -is confined. In occasionally repetitive pieces--some a decade old, some revised from lectures--carrying titles like ``Are Mothers Persons?,'' ``Reading the Slender Body,'' and ``Material Girl,'' Bordo demonstrates how this identification is deployed in law, medicine, literature, art, popular culture, and, especially, advertising, which she perceptively decodes by showing how the most trivial detail (men eating hearty meals, women consuming bite-size candies) reveal cultural values and even pathologies. Following Foucault's archaeological technique, Bordo shows how the female body has migrated from nature to culture, where it can be controlled through dieting and altered through surgery--and where women are perpetually at war with it. A cerebral introduction to liberal feminist thinking that's humanized by the author's anecdotes of her own experience as a female body (e.g., confessing to the delights of making stuffed cabbage) and that demonstrates what it advocates: ``What the body does is immaterial, so long as the imagination is free.'' my main source of learning GRE vocab words

I recently took the revised GRE and scored in the 85th percentile on the verbal section (much to my surprise I might add). I used both the Manhattans 500 Essential Words Flash Cards 500 Essential Words: GRE Vocabulary Flash Cards as well as the Manhattan 500 Advanced Words Flash Cards 500 Advanced Words: GRE Vocabulary Flash Cards. After making it through both of these sets of flash cards, I felt like I had a fairly good vocabulary for the GRE and did see many of these words on the test. [By the way, if these cards are out of stock on Amazon, just call Manhattan and buy them over the phone, that's what I had to do. I don't know why they have issues stocking these on Amazon]

With this noted, if you do have additional time after finishing these two sets of flash cards, I **HIGHLY RECOMMEND** that you learn the 300 or so most common root words for the GRE as well. Root words are very helpful in deciphering words that you don't know that will come up on the GRE. I found Barron's Essential Words for the GRE book Essential Words for the GRE (Barron's GRE) to be a good source for this, although I'm sure you can find these same root words in the Kaplan or related books as well. And while 300 root words seems like a lot of words to learn, you will probably know some/many of these words already, so fear not! There doesn't seem to be a good set of root word flash cards out there, so I ended up making my own, which was fine. One last note about learning root words: they will also help to strengthen and reinforce the vocab words you already know or are learning from both sets of the Manhattan cards. Learn your root words!

If you need help with reading comprehension and verbal practice problems, I used several different books. Here is my preferred list of books, in order:

Kaplan New GRE Verbal Workbook
New GRE Verbal Workbook (Kaplan GRE)
While I usually don't like Kaplan as a company (and I have not used any of their other books), I *would* highly recommend using their verbal workbook as there seems to be a good amount of practice problems and they seem similar to what you might see on the GRE.

Secondly, I did use the Barron's GRE Verbal Workbook Barron's GRE Verbal Workbook and while I found it useful for it's large amount of practice problems, I found some of the vocab words used as answers were less common that what I saw either on the GRE or on other practice problems and practice tests. With this noted, I still recommend using this book.

Finally, I did use Manhattan's Reading Comprehension and Essay GRE Strategy Book as well. Reading Comprehension & Essays GRE Strategy Guide, 3rd Edition (Manhattan Prep Strategy Guides). The best thing I got from this book is learning how to take brief notes while reading over the reading passages on the GRE. Taking notes helps to reinforce what you are reading, a technique not talked about very often by other books. The practice problems in this book are decent, but nothing above that. I do wish they could have put more practice problems in this book (like the Kaplan Verbal Workbook), but there is still useful content here. If you are struggling with the analytical writing section, there are some good tips on this section as well.

One final note about both practicing your verbal, but also your math/quantitative: do as many practice tests as you can!!! When you purchase a book (any book I believe) from Manhattan, you get an access code to 6 full length online practice tests. I found these practice tests VERY VERY USEFUL for getting comfortable with the GRE format but also applying all of the verbal and math skills I was practicing. Most of the questions are very similar in difficulty to what you will see and you can review your questions as well. By the way, always review problems you get wrong, this is really important! For Kaplan, you have to purchase the Kaplan Premiere GRE review book to get the disc with access to 10 verbal practice tests and 10 quantitative practice tests. Like the Manhattan, I found these practice tests VERY VERY useful. Do yourself a favor, and get access to both the Manhattan and the Kaplan practice tests It will help immensely!

Good cards, better than Kaplan

I bought the Kaplan AND these Manhattan GRE flashcards. The Manhattan are better, and here is why:

Basically they are both the same in content. The Kapplan have a nice pronunciation guide, which is the only benefit they have over these.

The Kaplan cards (NOT THESE MANHATTAN CARDS) are cheap. They are printed on thin paper, and they are physically pretty small. Also I wish the printing on the back were upside-down from how it is now (both brands are like this). These Manhattan cards are bigger, printed on card stock but still reasonably thin, and come with a nice key-ring that fits through holes. With these Manhattan cards you load up the key ring, and blast through about 50, maybe stash them in a large pocket and get to them later, or throw them in the backpack. Those Kaplan cards you are forced to try and keep the tiny cards together in stacks. The Manhattan you will use more because they are just easier to work with.

The Best Way to Learn New Vocab (If You're Like Me)

These are by far the best way for me to learn new vocabulary. I looked at all kinds of different GRE vocab media, including flash card and activity apps, website vocab learning quizzes, and different books which took an incredible variety of approaches, including dictionary-like, thesaurus-like, grouping words by category, and activities getting you to absorb the meaning from context clues. In the end, I got this and the 500 Advanced Words sets because they had everything the books had in an easy-to-sort format. The first thing I did was start yanking out chunks of cards and separating them into three categories: Known, Review, and Study. The Known pile includes cards I don't have to look at again, but serve as a reminder of how much I already know! The Review pile includes cards that had a definition or partial definition I wasn't familiar with, but, for the most part, I knew the word. The Study pile was the scary pile of words I didn't know.

Once I got over my fear of the size of the Study pile, I started pulling them out of the pile in groups, reviewing them from the front and the back, and taking advantage of their reminders, helpful hints, synonyms, and root words (all listed conveniently on the back). When I hit a rut in my focus, I began turning the cards into crossword puzzles using online crossword puzzle generators. And once I started being able to see my progress, which the cards make uniquely possible (i.e., my new fourth pile, "Learned" was getting bigger and bigger and eventually was bigger than the "Study" pile), I felt even more encouraged to tackle more of them.

Someone told me before I started that you can't really learn vocabulary for the GRE. You either know it or you don't. Yeah, I'm here to tell you that's 100% incorrect. I can't believe how many new words I've learned! And I've got these cards to thank for it. I definitely recommend making the piles I talked about if you tend to get discouraged or anxious...it's a constant visual reminder of exactly where you are and how far you've come. (It does take a while to separate them, but it's worth it.)

In short, I highly recommend getting these and the 500 Advanced Words sets in printed (vs. digital) format so that you can sort them. The cards are high quality with great example sentences, comparisons, synonyms, roots, and even silly hints that can help you remember complicated words. Separate out the words you know (go you!), then learn the ones you don't!

Make Me Great

For a book written by the author when in his 30s (I may be off by a few years), this is incredible. First, because Churchill himself wrote it, and not some professional writer. Second, because of the extreme detail, which suggests either an incredible memory, or a willingness to make up finely constructed overlays of fiction. Maybe this is a little of both. Churchill either covers his tracks well, or presents the facts very pleasantly.
His mom ignores him and his dad holds about 3 substantive conversations with him. In return, he idolizes and idealizes both, consoling himself by getting in trouble at school, and playing army at home. Like a latter-day Peter the Great, his childhood army games lay a foundation for adult army leadership, although Churchill stays more constrained than the despotic Russian. He maintains, however, a raw animal side to his spirit which stays intact his whole life, resulting, in one memorable event about 40 or 45 years after this book cuts off with Churchill's marriage, where Churchill pauses on an inspection of a European battlefield after the defeat of Germany to urinate on the famed "Siegfried Line" in front of a group of military dignitaries. Naughty boy to the end.
Churchill convincingly puts himself back into young boy mode and preserves for us portraits of his nurse, Mrs. Everest, the hatefulness of boarding school, and the release of achieving self-actualization in the form of military school at Sandhurst, and then a whirlwind of military adventures on several continents, arranged mostly by his influential and adulterous mother. Not much adultery here, but William Manchester goes through it in detail in his first of the two-volume set "The Last Lion." Churchill never criticizes his mother; he just takes maximum advantage of her contacts.
In a double inversion of himself as the subject, this is a great summary of how Churchill decided to become a great man by first getting noticed in the middle of adventures, and writing about them during and afterwards. Plus getting paid for the writing to support himself on a scale correlative to other British subjects who either inherited it, or made it big in business. But it was all substrate for his political ambitions.
Teddy Roosevelt thought Churchill was a "show off." Which is probably true, and which comes out clearly in the video-ization of this book, under the name of "Young Winston." But he seems to have been a lovable showoff, and if Kennedy had not intervened, American political aspirants may instead be more self-consiously modeling themselves on Young Winston.
One problem: John Churchill had no male offspring, according to the family tree Winston added to his biography of Marlborough. No problem, just call yourself a Churchill, not a "Spencer-Churchill" or even a "Spencer" and just go to market as a Churchill. Plus make yourself great. He definitely did, and this book records what it also produces.

A very entertaining read

This is a very interesting, fast-paced book that provides a good introduction to Winston Churchill. Indeed, after reading this I was compelled to read "The Unruly Giant", which is a very solid biography recently written by Norman Rose giving further insight into this fascinating historical charactor.
I agree with the other reviewer in saying that Churchill provides an amazing amount of detail about the early exploits of his life, leading one to wonder just how much of it really happpened and how much he chose to embellish when writing this book some years later. Also, Churchill's constant references to contemporary events are sometimes confusing and frustrating unless one knows a lot of the history of the British empire and its political scene during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
None the less, it is a good book to start with if one wishes to learn about one of the 20th century's truly great men.

Wonderful photo album of Charlie Chaplin

This book is wall-to-wall black & white photos (color photography was rare or non-existent in his early days in Hollywood) with captions. The pictures are mainly still shots or behind-the-scenes from Chaplin's many movies, but there are some photos of him as The Tramp and as himself with famous people of the day (movie star and friend Douglas Fairbanks, Sr., aviation inventors Wilbur and Orville Wright, Gandhi, Winston Churchill, Albert Einstein, etc. There are a few pictures of Chaplin dressed as Napoleon which has caused speculation as to whether Chaplin was dressing up for fun or contemplating making a historical film. There are a few chapters of text about Chaplin's life but 95% of this big coffee table book are photos.

A Beautiful Book

This is a beautiful art book. Some reviewers have complained that the illustrations are not in color. This must apply to the paperback edition because the hardcover is in full color throughout. For a more complete retelling of the Ramayana I recommend The Ramayana: A Modern Retelling of the Great Indian Epic.

No color inside

You're heard it before - never judge a book by it's cover. Well that's so true about this book. I bought it because i was impressed by the color and detail of the cover illustration. I was expecting beautiful full color illustrations throught based on the book description, but all the illustrations, except for the cover, are in sephia. The translation, on the other hand, reads well. It's very concise, but full of memorable imagery.
