Worst college textbook

This book is even worse than Al-kitaab part one. The author really should have kept the same format as Alif Baa
This book has no english to arabic glossary!! So don't bother trying to figure out what the Arabic word you learned for a certain word was. Your just going to have to look through every single word in the Arabic to English glossary until something looks like it will work.
The layout is awful and the instructions are unclear for many assignments. Homework can take hours just to complete one assignment in the book because the assignments are more advanced than the Arabic level you are supposed to be at. Many questions and sentences that you are supposed to translate include words that you don't know and can't look up because there is no glossary.
You finally learn the rest of the colors in this book! It only takes at a minimum 3 college courses to learn how to say numbers past 10. You also finally learn some body parts! This book is focused much more on grammar than vocab, but don't worry! The amount of vocab per chapter doubles in this book!
You begin working with case endings, so you finally find out why some words end in an "iin" sound and others end in "uun" which is completely useless in dialect. Many native arabic speakers themselves don't even understand case endings because it is basically the highest level of Qu'ranic grammar you can attain. So you learn this insanely difficult grammar while you are learning something as simple as your colors? It makes not sense!
You have to spend money to purchase the "companion website" which is almost identical to the cd but includes the ability for the professor to see your automatic grade rather than grading your written work themselves.
The dialect sections of the glossary just leave some words black even though there are dialect versions of the words. And it is really frustrating when you come to a new vocab word that is similar to an old one you learned so they don't bother including the English translation for you.

Stay Away

I never thought anything could be worse than Al-Kitaab part 1. However I was wrong, Al-Kitaab part 2 is even worse. I had to use this book through Intermediate Arabic 2 and Advanced Arabic. This book is horrible. It has all the same weaknesses as Al-Kitaab part 1 but they are even worse in this book. I don't even know where to begin. Just like Alif Baa and Al Kitaab Part 1, the jump between Part 1 and Part 2 is way too big! Like part one, it is more of the guessing technique, nothing is explained to you, the grammar lessons are so short and they only give you one or two examples (with no English translation!). For example in the first chapter they teach how to say something is forbidden, they give you ONE example of how to it, using only one of the two possible ways you can say it, and then expect you to do a whole exercise on it. They also expect you to guess verbal patterns based on their root, which even my Egyptian and Lebanese friends say is impossible. The authors want you to guess at everything! It is so frustrating. They give way too much vocabulary per chapter, this isn't bad actually, but the problem is you never activate this vocabulary. The videos rarely use half the vocab they give you, neither do the interviews or the dialogues. Also like Al-Kitaab part 1, non of these dialogues teach you things you will actually need. At this level I still didn't know how to talk about my hobbies in Arabic, I couldn't even order food or drink in a restaurant or anything like that. And it wasn't just me, my how class could not. Our teacher made print out sheets of that type of things because the book does not teach it. Well, this book is just as bad. The dialogues are useless so our the stories. They don't have the dialogues/stories written out either, or even have a translation. Every other language book I have ever used ALWAYS has the dialogues written out, you won't learn by just listening to it, maybe you can offer a couple of ONLY listening exercises but not the entire book. It is ridiculous. The exercises in this book are quite bad too, you never actually write full sentences in Arabic. It is always fill in the blank or answer questions that usually only require one word answers. During my Arabic classes we had to use Rosetta Stone, and I actually learned more from Rosetta Stone (that is saying a lot since RS Arabic is pretty bad) than this book. I had to supplement this book with other books otherwise I don't think I would have passed the classes or have gotten anywhere in the level of Arabic I am in now. I love languages and have learned other hard ones as well, I have used countless language books and the Al-Kitaab series has been the worst. If you need these books for your class make sure you get another book to supplement, especially a grammar, or you will extremely frustrated the entire time.
