Dead Downwind: Ten Harrowing Days That Changed Aviation History, by Bill Riddle

In 1924 . three years before Charles
Lindbergh makes his historic flight over the Atlantic - post WWI America is convinced she can do anything she puts her mind to. In the midst of the RoaringTwenties however, the boisterous nation's capitol is rocked by political infighting for the control of military aviation. The brash young army general Billy Mitchell is attempting to wrest air power
away from both the army and navy to
create an independent air force under his own command. To counter this move, the brilliant navy Rear Admiral William Moffett has challenged Hawaii-based
Commander John Rodgers with a deathdefying mission; one designed to sway the politicians and the public alike, to the navy's side. If Rodgers accepts, he will command three planes in a seemingly impossible mission; the first non-stop flight from San Francisco to Honolulu. This bold gamble could make or break the navy's bid for control of its own air power and unbeknownst to
Rodgers, Moffett has lined up a second publicity-grabbing stunt involving the world's largest dirigible.
In this gripping historic novel, follow
John Rodgers' spellbinding story to its
riveting conclusion as political intrigue, inter-service rivalries, engineering challenges and personal hurdles all conspire to doom the mission. Then, an anxious public is forced to hold its collective breath when one of the planes
is forced down in the middle of the vast Pacific Ocean and matters are made worse as the navy dirigible experiences serious trouble of her own. The dramatic aftermath will change the course of aviation history.

Wonderful!
By Kathleen Keystone
This is an amazing book full of beautiful period piece photographs of Hawaii in the 1920s as well as an exciting, nearly forgotten story that you could never dream up on your own. To find out that the historical part is all true with actual quotes and newspaper headlines is a jaw dropper. For anyone who is, or knows of, someone interested in historical fiction, flying, sailing, Hawaii and/or a poignant love story, this is a must have for the collection.

Dead Downwind is a page burner !! Great read!!
By Daniel Williams
This is an incredible saga that brings history alive. Mr. Riddle intertwines aviation history with tropical island flavors to create a tale, that once started, is hard to put down. The details of emerginig state of the art technology with personal profiles of pride, strength, honor and love are tightly bound yet delicatly intertwinded.
In this case Dead Downwind is Dead On!! I bought 4 more copies as gifts.

A Song for Nagasaki: The Story of Takashi Nagai-Scientist, Convert, and Survivor of the Atomic Bomb, by Fr. Paul Glynn

On August 9, 1945, an American B-29 dropped an atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan, killing tens of thousands of people in the blink of an eye, while fatally injuring and poisoning thousands more. Among the survivors was Takashi Nagai, a pioneer in radiology research and a convert to the Catholic Faith. Living in the rubble of the ruined city and suffering from leukemia caused by over-exposure to radiation, Nagai lived out the remainder of his remarkable life by bringing physical and spiritual healing to his war-weary people.

A Song for Nagasaki tells the moving story of this extraordinary man, beginning with his boyhood and the heroic tales and stoic virtues of his family's Shinto religion. It reveals the inspiring story of Nagai's remarkable spiritual journey from Shintoism to atheism to Catholicism. Mixed with interesting details about Japanese history and culture, the biography traces Nagai's spiritual quest as he studied medicine at Nagasaki University, served as a medic with the Japanese army during its occupation of Manchuria, and returned to Nagasaki to dedicate himself to the science of radiology. The historic Catholic district of the city, where Nagai became a Catholic and began a family, was ground zero for the atomic bomb.

After the bomb disaster that killed thousands, including Nagai's beloved wife, Nagai, then Dean of Radiology at Nagasaki University, threw himself into service to the countless victims of the bomb explosion, even though it meant deadly exposure to the radiation which eventually would cause his own death. While dying, he also wrote powerful books that became best-sellers in Japan. These included The Bells of Nagasaki, which resonated deeply with the Japanese people in their great suffering as it explores the Christian message of love and forgiveness. Nagai became a highly revered man and is considered a saint by many Japanese people.

"Christians and non-Christians alike were deeply moved by Nagai's faith in Christ that made him like Job of the Scriptures: in the midst of the nuclear wilderness he kept his heart in tranquility and peace, neither bearing resentment against any man nor cursing God."

A Masterpiece
By Raymond H. Mullen
Once in a while, I find that I have read something so magnificent that it has a profound significance on my very soul. This is such a book.
The story of Dr. Takashi Naigai is a story of a self made man who eventually meets that still small voice that has been calling to him all of his life.
WWII brought a day of reckoning for thousands upon thousands of creatures just trying to survive the madness of war. As it has been said, "War brings out the worst in man---War brings out the best in man." This story brings real meaning to that statement.
The Japanese are a proud people. They are also deeply rooted in their culture and their religions. Dr. Nagai struggles with tradition, heritage and his inner self; his purpose in life and his duty to his countrymen as well his enemies.
He was a pioneer in the use of x-ray in the medical field. This new kind of energy would have a lasting affect on his young life. At the time, it was unknown just how much radiation a person could absorb before it became lethal. Knowing the danger, he continued on in his research as he sought to save lives by this new method of diagnosing . Already suffering from radiation exposure, he finds himself at ground zero when hell was unleashed on Nagasaki in August of 1945. He lost the love of his life that day, his wife.
His story continues as he throws himself into his work amidst horrors too terrible to even try to understand. His spiritual journey from Japanese traditions, to atheism and agnosticism to finding God through his conversion to the Catholic faith is such a testimony to the power and grace of the one true God.
Was Dr. Nagai a martyr? He certainly didn't think so, however his humble mannerisms and immeasurable faith brought many to the foot of the cross.
"A Song For Nagasaki" is a masterpiece. I am so blessed to have been able to read and review this work. I encourage you to make this a 'must read' on your list for the near future.

Absolutely Compelling...
By StarLady
This book is riveting, one that, once you begin, you cannot stop until you finish. The story of Takashi Nagai is amazing and inspirational, overcoming so many burdens and trials even just to arrive at "mere" belief. He learned what love was and used his gifts and talents for the glory of God, even in the face of pure sadness. I also appreciated that the book describes some history of Christianity in Japan, a topic that I did not know much about. The events of August 9, 1945 are made even more tragic when you realize that not only was there an incredible loss of innocent human life, but the atomic bomb struck at the heart of Catholicism in a country where Christianity has always struggled to gain a foothold. As a Catholic myself, it wrenched my heart to read of the sufferings of so many, but Nagai's story is one of wisdom and hope.

Nagasaki's light
By Ash
This book has touched my heart in a way that no other book has ever done before. I read "The bells of Nagasaki", before this, so I had some information on Nagai prior to reading. The book goes into extreme detail about his marriage and children. The love this man had for others around him cannot be described with words. This was a man that was well educated, a metacognitive thinker, and convert. I just finished my book with tears in my eyes. This man's final days were both sad and beautiful at the same time. You need to read this book if you are a Christian, a Japanophile, or are studying religion/philosophy. Thanks to this book, I want to go to Nagasaki so badly now.

BE WARNED:
Like the "The bells of Nagasaki", there are some very depressing, graphic descriptions in this book when they talk about the Atomic Bombing. Once you have started reading the book, you need to continue reading, or you can become depressed.

Pitch Perfect (Boys of Summer Book 1), by Sierra Dean

She’d be the perfect catch if he could take his eye off the ball.

Boys of Summer, Book 1

Emmy Kasper knows exactly how lucky she is. In a sport with few opportunities for women at the pro level, she’s just landed her dream job as head athletic trainer for the San Francisco Felons baseball team. Screwing up is not an option.

She’s lost in thought as she pedals to the spring training facility, her mind abuzz with excitement as she rounds a corner—and plows head-on into two runners. The end of her career dances before her eyes when she realizes she’s almost run over the star pitcher.

As Tucker Lloyd watches the flustered Emmy escape with his bandana tied around her skinned knee, the view is a pleasant change from worrying about his flagging fastball. At thirty-six, the tail end of his career is glimmering on the horizon. If he can’t pull something extraordinary out of his ball cap, the new crop of rookies could make this season his last.

The last thing either of them needs is a distraction.

The last thing either of them expects is love.

Warning: Contains a down-on-his-luck pitcher, a good-girl athletic therapist, chemistry that’s out of the park and sexy times that’ll make them round all the bases.

Great Reading
By LAS Reviewer
Pitch Perfect is a very good story. It centers on the development of a "forbidden" relationship between thirty-six year old pitcher Tucker Lloyd, whose career is hanging by a thread because of having one year off due to the surgery, and Emmy Kasper, the first female head athletic trainer of the baseball team. They both have their reasons why they should not be together, but the attraction between them is much stronger than any obstacles.

As a baseball fan and former softball player, I enjoyed reading Pitch Perfect. Author Sierra Dean captured well the essence of the game and the companionship between the players. The most important details were her descriptions of the fields and the atmosphere prior to and during a game. The writing was done so well that I felt like I was in the crowd watching the game. Characters, both main and secondary, were likable and well written. I felt a little sad after the last page because it meant I had to part with them. I grew very fond of them. Another thing I liked about the hero and heroine is the fact that they weren't bogged down by being tormented by their past; they do not have any deep and dark secrets, and that was really refreshing.

The only thing that lessened my reading pleasure was the author's occasional use of unnecessary details. Her in depth description of the new Yankees' stadium and history seemed more like an info dump. Although I agreed with her point completely, going into too much detail tended to really disrupt the pace of the story and slowed it down. I think that if the story had focused less on the not so important details, it would have been better.

All in all I liked Pitch Perfect. I would definitely recommend it as a good read, but especially to those romance readers who like sports romances.

unique and fresh story line
By DiDi - Guilty Pleasures BR
Pitch Perfect is the first book in the new Boys of Summer series by Sierra Dean. This is the first book I have read of hers and it won't be the last. Ms. Dean has a writing style that captures the characters chemistry perfectly and lets the story consume your heart.

Emmy's fought hard to achieve her dream job in a male oriented position. She knows she is going to have to go above and beyond normal standards to prove she is the best at what she does.

Tucker is stepping back up to the plate after an injury benched him last season. He finds himself having to prove to the GM that he is worth keeping around. This is a new position for him. He has been the team star for years and isn't ready to have his career end yet.

Tucker and Emmy need a year with no distractions. They both need to focus solely on what is at stake. However, with these two working so close together and their attraction for each other igniting, they have no chance at keeping a strictly professional relationship.

I know this plot may sound similar to some, especially if you read many sports themed romance books, but I promise this one offers a unique and fresh story line. It is not a book driven by drama and angst. There really isn't even the typical conflict/resolve scenario. It's a heartwarming, beautiful, passionate love story that follows through an entire baseball season. It's clearly written by a true fan who not only knows how to write about a great sport, but succeeded to entwine a great romance into the mix. If you are looking for a lighthearted, funny, extremely sexy story grab this. I don't think you will be disappointed.

I thoroughly enjoyed this new sports novel
By Under The Covers Book Blog
~Reviewed by ANGELA & posted at Under the Covers Book Blog

Tucker is a baseball pitcher from a San Francisco Felons who is almost at the end of his career. After a major surgery, a sports trainer...a very attractive trainer, is brought in to help him recover. Of course, Emmy is not single , but that status does not last very long. Well, working with these players, I would hope I'd be single too. Don't get me wrong, it won't be an easy rode for this couple. There will be a little angst, lots of tension but plenty of flirting, sexy scenes and don't forget...baseball.

I thoroughly enjoyed this new sports novel. It has good humor, very sweet and sexy scenes , and I love the characters. I thought Tucker was a sweetheart. I really enjoyed that he was straight forward with his feelings and attractions for Emmy. And his overall persona just screamed sexy. Emmy on the other hand, wasn't all that sexy to me, even if I went that way =). But what I did find attractive was her independence. I love that she is standing on her own in an unfamiliar city. Anyone that can do that even for a job earns my respect. Ms. Dean did a great job with these two. I like her writing and the voices she gave her characters. She also did an awesome job with the setting. Certain scenes in the book that mentioned places, scenery or neighborhood was pretty accurate.

Ms. Dean created a charming love story between a pitcher, his trainer and their love for the game. Pitch Perfect is an awesome and sweet read.

An affecting and hope-filled posthumous collection of essays and stories from the talented young Yale graduate whose title essay captured the world’s attention in 2012 and turned her into an icon for her generation.

Marina Keegan’s star was on the rise when she graduated magna cum laude from Yale in May 2012. She had a play that was to be produced at the New York International Fringe Festival and a job waiting for her at the New Yorker. Tragically, five days after graduation, Marina died in a car crash.

As her family, friends, and classmates, deep in grief, joined to create a memorial service for Marina, her unforgettable last essay for the Yale Daily News, “The Opposite of Loneliness,” went viral, receiving more than 1.4 million hits. She had struck a chord.

Even though she was just twenty-two when she died, Marina left behind a rich, expansive trove of prose that, like her title essay, captures the hope, uncertainty, and possibility of her generation. The Opposite of Loneliness is an assemblage of Marina’s essays and stories that, like The Last Lecture, articulates the universal struggle that all of us face as we figure out what we aspire to be and how we can harness our talents to make an impact on the world.

J. R. Moehringer About J. R. Moehringer

J. R. Moehringer, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for feature writing in 2000, is a former national correspondent for the Los Angeles Times. Author of the bestselling memoir, The Tender Bar, he is also the co-author of Open by Andre Agassi. His most recent publication is Sutton, published in 2012.

J. R. Moehringer on Marina Keegan

I never met Marina Keegan, but when I learned of her death I felt as if I'd known her well. We belonged to several of the same tribes. We were both Yalies. We were both from the Northeast. Both Irish, both writers. We walked some of the same paths, probably sat in the same chairs. So it was as if I’d lost a close cousin, or even a kid sister.

Then I read her work. In that terrible week, as media outlets posted her essays, as people around the world reposted them, I read every word with a sinking, quickening heart. The first news reports, I felt, had been wrong - this wasn’t simply a promising young writer, this was a prodigy, a rare rare talent, still raw, still evolving, but shockingly mature. From the few things she’d published in her brief life I could project a remarkable career, a line of words stretching far into the future, words that would have thrilled and enlightened, words that might have changed people’s lives. As I grieved for her family, her friends, her boyfriend, I also grieved for the global community of readers who would never know the pleasure and excitement of a brand new book by Marina Keegan.

Marina Keegan

All of which made me think there should be, there must be, at least one book with Marina’s name on the spine. Publishers aren’t eager to take chances these days, but I hoped that one would have the guts, the heart, to make a slim, posthumous collection of Marina’s stories and essays and poems. I could actually see the book in my mind, stacked on the front table of a sunlit bookstore, perhaps the Yale bookstore, where I’m sure Marina dreamed about her work appearing one day.

A year later, it came in the mail, the very book I’d seen in my mind, with the only possible title: The Opposite of Loneliness. I studied the striking cover photo and felt a wave of sorrow and joy. Then I sat down and read it and that sorrow-joy feeling became my constant companion over the next several days.

This is a book full of wonders. This is a book full of sentences that any writer, 21 or 101, would be proud to have authored. This is a book that will speak to young readers, because it expresses some of that inexpressible anxiety of starting out, of making life's first momentous choices, of wanting and fearing and needing and hoping and dreading everything at the same time. It will also speak to older readers, because it’s an inspiring reminder of youth’s brimming energy, its quivering sense of possibility.

Young people get a bad rap for thinking they’re immortal, and acting accordingly, but Marina dwelled on the end. Hers, civilization’s, the sun’s. “And time, that takes survey of all the world, must have a stop.” She must have heard her beloved adviser Harold Bloom expound many times on Hotspur’s line, and clearly she took it to heart, personalized it. Savor every half-second, she seemed to be saying, to herself, to her readers, and her meditations on death, once charmingly precocious, now feel breathtakingly premonitory. Describing a group of fifty whales beached near her house on Cape Cod, she laments that their songs don’t transmit on land, and thus they can’t communicate their final thoughts. “I imagined dying slowly next to my mother or a lover, helplessly unable to relay my parting message.”

Such was her fate. And yet it wasn't, not really. This book is her parting message, exquisitely relayed.

And it’s not a mournful message. There’s so much light and humor here. In the title essay alone I hear glimmers of Lorrie Moore, Ann Beattie, Fran Lebowitz. For example, when Marina worries that other kids are sprinting ahead of her, embarking on fabulous careers while she’s still clinging to the cocoon of Yale. “Some of us have focused ourselves. Some of us know exactly what we want and are on the path to get it; already going to med school, working at the perfect NGO, doing research. To you I say both congratulations and you suck.”

My favorite passage might be this gorgeous burst of nostalgia, this prose poem about the bright college years. “When the check is paid and you stay at the table. When it’s four a.m. and no one goes to bed. That night with the guitar. That night we can’t remember. That time we did, we went, we saw, we laughed, we felt. The hats.”

The hats. That tiny sentence was the first raindrop before the deluge, a tickling hint of all that was to come. How many 21-year-olds are capable of a line so sure-handed, so precisely and comically placed? The only other two-word sentence I can think of that had me laughing aloud and shaking my head was in Lolita. (Humbert summarizing his mother’s demise: “Picnic, lightning. ”)

If I’d met Marina, I’d have urged her to keep these first hopeful essays handy, cherish their energy, refer to them whenever beset by despair and doubt. Instead I’ll have to give that advice to her readers.

I also might have told Marina that we do have a word for the opposite of loneliness. It’s called reading. Again, I’ll have to tell her readers. This book reminds us: as long as there are books, we’re never completely alone. Open it anywhere and Marina’s voice leaps off the page, uncommonly honest, forever present. With this lovely book always at hand, we and Marina will never be completely apart.

Review
“In her brief life Marina Keegan managed to achieve a precocious literary mastery. Her wry, wise, lyrical voice is unforgettable, and her vital, exuberant spirit reminds us powerfully to seize the day. Though every sentence throbs with what might have been, this remarkable collection is ultimately joyful and inspiring, because it represents the wonder that she was.” (J.R. Moehringer, Pulitzer Prize winner and New York Times bestselling author of The Tender Bar)

"I will never cease mourning the loss of my beloved former student Marina Keegan. This book gives partial evidence of the extraordinary promise that departed with her. Throughout she manifests authentic dramatic invention and narrative skill. Beyond all those, she makes a vital appeal to everyone in her generation not to waste their gifts in mere professionalism but instead to invest their youthful pride and exuberance both in self-development and in the improvement of our tormented society.” (Harold Bloom, Sterling Professor of the Humanities and English, Yale University)

"Many of my students sound forty years old. They are articulate but derivative, their own voices muffled by their desire to skip over their current age and experience, which they fear trivial, and land on some version of polished adulthood without passing Go. Marina was twenty-one and sounded twenty-one: a brainy twenty-one, a twenty-one who knew her way around the English language, a twenty-one who understood that there were few better subjects than being young and uncertain and starry-eyed and frustrated and hopeful. When she read her work aloud around our seminar table, it would make us snort with laughter, and then it would turn on a dime and break our hearts." (Anne Fadiman, Yale University Professor of English and Francis Writer in Residence and author of The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down and Ex Libris)

"Illuminates the optimism and neurosis felt by new grads everywhere. . .Like every millenial who's seen irony elevated to an art form, Keegan brings self-awareness to the collective insecurity of her peers even as she captures it with a precision that only comes from someone who feels it too. How unfortunate that she will never know the value readers will find in her work." (Publishers Weekly)

"Funny, poignant, tender, and fiercely alive, 'The Opposite of Loneliness' contains the keen observations of a short lifetime—and the wisdom of a much longer one." (Jennifer DuBois, author of Cartwheel and A Partial History of Lost Causes)

“The writing Marina Keegan left behind offers a tantalizing taste of a literary voice still in development, yet already imbued with unusual insight, nuance, humor, and sensitivity.” (Deborah Treisman, Fiction Editor, "The New Yorker")

“Two years after a young writer’s death, her words soar. . . . The Opposite of Loneliness...sparkles with talent, humanity, and youth. The prose, polished but thoroughly unselfconscious, is heartbreaking evidence of what could have been.” (O Magazine)

"A bittersweet, what-might-have-been book filled with youthful optimism, energy, honesty, and beyond-her-years wisdom." (Yale Alumni Magazine)

"The Opposite of Loneliness captures in both fiction and nonfiction [Keegan's] adventures in love and lust, the weird bliss of being stoned, and, as she writes, what it’s like to see 'everything in the world build up and then everything in the world fall down again.'" (Elle)

"Remarkable... a compelling literary voice... the appeal of this collection is its improvisational quality, its feeling of being unfinished but always questioning." (Chicago Tribune)

"How do you mourn the loss of a fiery talent that was barely a tendril before it was snuffed out? Answer: Read this book. A clear-eyed observer of human nature, [Keegan] could take a clever idea...and make it something beautiful." (People Magazine)

"A triumph...Keegan was right to prod us all to reflect on what we seek from life." (Nicholas Kristof, "The New York Times")

"The Opposite of Loneliness does [Keegan's] talent and memory justice, both as a picture of a generation entering adulthood and as a highly personal portrait of a gifted young woman." (Pittsburgh-Post Gazette)

“What a gift Keegan has left behind. Not only in her written words...but also in her legacy of social activism and fierce belief in leading a life of purpose, not privilege. (Joseph P. Kahn, Boston Globe)

“Keegan’s fiction… is built around the kind of empathetic extrapolation that makes for all the best realism… Keegan would have been—would have continued to be—a star. She would have been famous, not quietly or vaguely, but really, really famous.” (The New Republic)

“[Keegan ] was one of the most present, incisive, and hopeful writers.… That’s the gift and the pain of her book. How incredible, how lucky, that we get to read her words, that people who never knew her or her work can find it for themselves, that she was in some way given the chance to speak to the world the way she wanted.” (Buzzfeed)

“A glimpse of a young woman who is growing as a writer and a person, someone who’s thinking deeply about love and the world around her and the scale of the universe….I have no doubt she would have been great.” (Bustle)

“In the little time [Keegan] graced the world she created a life’s work many writers could only dream of achieving in decades.” (MariaShriver.com)

“This posthumous collection of essays and short stories is beautiful and brilliant, young but not childish—just like the author was. Every essay is a gem you want to pick up and put in your pocket, taking it out from time to time to see how it looks in different lights—the lights of promise and potential, yearning and memory. The Opposite of Loneliness will make people cry and hope.” (Rewire Me)

“The loveliest piece of writing I’ve ever seen from someone so young… Her voice is steady and often very funny, her senses of character and pace are frighteningly good, and the flow of her prose is easy to get carried away by. She wasn't just college-talented; she was talented, period.” (Kevin Roose, New York Magazine)

“A new voice of her generation.” (The Hartford Courant)

"Wonderful... Marina Keegan did that thing we all want to do as writers: say what everyone else is thinking, but better." (Refinery29)

""Inspirational." (The Huffington Post)

"Full of uncanny wisdom...Marina would not want to be remembered because she was dead. She would want to be remembered because she’s good. No worries there, Marina. You left us aching for more." (Detroit News)

Ms. Keegan takes on the meaningful and mundane with wit and grace. Her words alternatively swagger and tiptoe.... Reading this book is both heartbreaking and entertaining." (The Economist)

"In her short life, Keegan exhibited uncanny wisdom for an individual of any age, and a literary talent perhaps even more rare." (The Huffington Post)

"Keegan's short stories are relatable and entertaining while her essays, including some of her op-eds from the Yale Daily News, showcase her work as an already accomplished writer. Young writers everywhere will look to her as an inspiration." (The Huffington Post)

"The ultimate summer read for Gen-Y, by Gen-Y." (Elite Daily)

A Great Collection of Stories by a Fantastic Writer Who Left Us Way Too Soon
By Elbeau
Amazing! I am an avid reader. As a frame of reference, I like Haruki Murakami, Mikhail Bulgakov, Mitch Albom, Lorrie Moore, and the like. I also like books like Christopher Moore's when I need laughs. But Marina Keegan is in a class by herself. Put aside her tragic and untimely death, which, admittedly, is very hard to do, it is almost impossible to believe these stories were written by someone in her very early 20's. To me, a great book is one that not merely keeps you involved while reading it, but adds something to you that doesn't go away. This is such a book. All but one of the stories in this book has made a lasting impact. It is truly sad that Ms. Keegan is not around to write more. I hold out hope that her family will see fit to publish more of her writing.

She was talented. At just 22, she had a strong sense of self in her writing. even when I was reading her fiction, I thought I was reading about her life. It's terrible that her life was cut so short - the book is ominous at times, almost as though she knew she would not live long. She spoke of death and what she hopes for her life, and what she hopes carries on after she passes. I am sure he mother is grateful for the one piece dedicated to her dedication as a mother. I read it in 2 days - I recommend.

A collection that will be your favorite read and one you'll share a life-time!
By HornFan2
It's tragically sad, that she was called home at 22. I'm not going to use words like connections, entitlement, privileged or call her work immature or label her the best student in an undergrad writing class in my review.

Rather I'm going to look at this using three criteria that Rita Crowley a fiery 50 year English Lit teacher/Professor, used in a writing class I took back in my college days.

Passion, be a wordsmith, and no piece is ever really complete, where the three things that she pounded into my head, that semester. All of which Marina had from reading, her life work collection.

She wasn't college-talented, but rather talented period, she had the knack to grab the reader, hold their attention and make you want to read more.

I was one of the millions who were inspired by her 'Opposite of Loneliness' essay, even joined Yale Daily News website, just to read the pieces they featured on the site of her work. Even have tucked away somewhere printed copies of them.

I read many articles, just to see if they posted links to essays/short stories I hadn't read. I've read most of this book already as individual pieces, but still enjoyed re-reading her work and several also are different versions.

I like the entire collection, it's because of Marina that I started to read short stories, previously I never bother with them, and she opened my eyes to realize just what I was missing out on by not reading them.

I'd like to think she's old school, she's not like most in her generation and worked extremely hard for everything she earned. Took full advantage of everything surrounding her in her short life, was a sponge and if she didn't know something, she wanted to know the answer.

She opened the doors, no one threw them open for her. She made herself get noticed, to stand out in crowd and confidently make the New Yorker know she was the best choice, to do a prestigious internship. Let herself be nurtured, was her own worst critic, and made her professors pass on or share her essays/short stories.

I know from my paying job, each year we have four interns that changes yearly. I've worked their 18 years, it's scary to me how many of these privileged people never took advantage of that fact, but I've worked with one whose parents were billionaires, you would never have known that if she didn't tell you, another while going through 8 years of college became a millionaire by dabbling with stocks, another flipped houses to pay for her college years and had the pleasure to work with several dozens, who while deep in debt earned everything they had through their own hard work.

Being a lifelong reader I feel cheated, that we never got to see this talented writer grow, see her develop into a best selling author, to have the chance to pre-order them on amazon, to either have a bookshelf full of her books or a collection of her work on my Kindle.

Surely she would have been loved by her readers, like Robert B. Parker, Robert Ludlum or Terry C. Johnston are.

Her legacy will be her writing, those who she's posthumously inspired will never let the light she lite ever burn out and will share this collection of her writing, to inspire future generations.

Lastly a huge thank you, to her parents, her friends, her professors, the Yale Daily news and everyone else who made this collection available for use.
