Wonderful reading for adults and children!!!!

Loved it! Love all the books in series. Wish it was true! Children are totally underestimated in life. These books should be made into a series. My step-son has read most of the books, it's his step-mum who has encouraged him to keep reading.

I chose this rating because it is a great book and I loved it I could not put it down it was like it was really true. The bits I liked about this book is the bit where James comes in and kisses Amy and also where they get into a big fight. I recommend this book to anyone from 13-16 because it is a great book and very exciting.

The Grameen Bank of Bangladesh has been extending small loans to poor borrowers (primarily women) to promote self-employment and income generation since 1976. The apparent success of the Grameen Bank (that is, recruitment of clients, investment of loans, recovery rates on invested loans and profit margins) has made microcredit a new model for poverty alleviation and sustainable development. Anthropological research results on Grameen Bank lending to women presented in this book, however, illuminates the link between the success of the bank and debt-cycling of borrowers. The priority of earning profits to insure institutional economic viability caused Bank employees at the grassroots level to emphasize increasing the number of loans disbursed and loan recovery. By using the joint liability model of lending, the Bank workers and borrowing peers impose intense pressure on clients for timely repayment. Many borrowers maintain their regular payment schedules, but do so through a process of loan recycling (that is, pay off previous loans with new ones) that considerably increases borrower debt liability. The debt burdens on individual households in turn increase tension and anxiety among household members and produce unintended consequences for many clients.This book examines women borrowers’ involvement with the microcredit program of the Grameen Bank, and the grassroots lending structure of the bank; it illustrates the implications of Grameen lending for the borrowers, their household members and bank workers. The focus of the study is on the processes of village-level microcredit operation; it addresses the realities of the day-to-day lives of women borrowers and bank workers and explains informant strategies for involving themselves in this microcredit scheme. The study is on the power dynamics of everyday lives of informants as they affect women borrowers’ relationships within the household and the loan centers, and bank worker relationships within the loan center and the bank.

About the Author
Aminur Rahman was born and raised in Bangladesh. He has a Master’s Degree in Sociology (University of Dhaka, Bangladesh), M.Phil in Social Anthropology (University of Oslo, Norway), and Ph.D. in Anthropology (University of Manitoba, Canada). Before going abroad for higher studies, Rahman worked for several years with national and international NGOs in Bangladesh in community development projects. He also taught at the University of Manitoba and has published in many international journals, including World Development. Rahman is currently working with the Small Enterprise Program of the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) in Ottawa, Canada.

Scary fun!

Nobody can do ghost stories like the British. Maybe it comes from having pubs and tea rooms that are several centuries old - in all that time, supernatural auras are bound to seep into the lifeblood. John Whitbourn's series of linked stories are not only about ghosts but also faeries that lurk along the railway line, monsters that live in video machines and beside freeways, historical figures who have survived death, devils, angels, rips in reality, time travel and a whole bunch of other things that just defy any description other than "weird". Mr Disvan and Mr Oakley are like a modern-day Holmes and Watson let loose in an English village where oddness is delivered with the morning milk bottles. It's rarely such fun to be scared witless!

Eerie and masterful

John Whitbourn's home town of Binscombe doesn't sound like a reassuring place to live. The ordinary becomes anything but. A man goes to a bus stop and is detained there for decades. A man breaks down on the motorway and discovers a clan of people living in the no-man's land we all pass unthinkingly day after day. A man loses his temper and tears a hole in the fabric of reality that leads to a parallel world. In the tradition of MR James and The Twilight Zone, these stories are unsettling, finely told and disturbingly convincing.

Understated creepiness

John Whitbourn gives us an understated collection of weird tales about a strange little town in England where the bizarre is just around the corner. Perhaps the only quibble is that maybe we could get a little more messy. That Whitbourn is a little too reserved. But I suppose that's an English thing. Anyway, this volume is well worth it if you like the odd and the strange lurking just beyond.

A good textbook regardless of the software expriation

It would be very unfair to rate this book one star just because the Mastercam trial disk has a short expiration date (I would encourage Mastercam users or user-to-be's to contact Mastercam (CNC Software Inc.) in order to encourage the company to give a trial of at least 3-4 months for their software.)

The book on the other hand is very user-friendly. I have used it to teach the software successfully at a community college sophomore level. It has step by step procedures for getting some projects done and also contains projects at the end of the units to "do on your own." It might not have everything under the sky but for that reason is a good complement to an effective trainer. Also, even though our software has been upgraded to X6, I have adopted this book again and will let my students know of the changes myself. I also provide my own extra projects.

I would recommend this book but I would also encourage the author to provide more excercises at the end of the chapters/units.

Do not order if you need the CD, it is timed out! CD in book instructed me to go to industrialpress.com for upgrade, but that download is also timed out! Buy the Learning MasterCam X8, that CD should not be timed out!

The book was great, the demo version of Mastercam was expired and completely unusable!

Tried calling a MasterCam reseller in my area several times about getting a current demo version of MasterCam but my phone calls were never returned! All 5 of them!!?? I will stick to using what I consider to be the most user friendly and fast CAM system out there, GibbsCam!

Just as good as volume 1

I love these Ballistic Matte Painting titles. Matte Painting 2 doesn't disappoint. These are gorgeous glossy books with a lot of concept artwork. I enjoy the tutorials, but I buy them more for the artwork honestly. I liked this one especially because it contained a lot of sci-fi artwork. At almost 200 pages I feel like I'm getting my money's worth. I'm eagerly awaiting volume 3 due out early next year. This isn't a criticism, but this book may be misleading when categorized as hardback. It's a softcover book with a slipcase that reproduces the front and back cover of the book. Beautiful publication-highly recommended.

Wonderous and heartfelt

The emotional punch that 32 pages of illustrations and text can deliver never ceases to amaze me. "Our Tree Named Steve" is so funny and so touching that upon finishing it for the first time I immediately reopened the book and read it again and then again to savor the humor and the beautiful story. Steve is the name a family gives to a special tree in their yard. Over the years it holds swings and hammocks, turns jump ropes, acts as third base, appears in family photos and shelters their home. The tree watches over the family as the children grow and change. Steve's "last trick" will make you gasp in dismay. There is solace for the family (and us) as Steve's spirit lives on.

David Catrow was exactly the right person to design this book. His illustrations are a perfect balance of humor and pathos. I love the dog. Alan Zweibel is a gifted television comedy writer but this is his first children's book. He must be congratulated. He has crafted something quite wondrous and fine.

Destined to become a classic!

I'm not sure who loved this book more - me or the kids! Set around one very special tree, "Our Tree Named Steve" traces the life of family and the changes that they go through. But through all of the changes, one thing remains constant - Steve's presence in their lives. The family quite literally grows up around Steve, the tree that greeted them in the yard as they moved in. This story, told with earnest simplicity, teaches children about the "roots" of family and how to cope with loss. This book is filled with humor, warmth and heart. Children of all ages will love "Steve" - and parents will love reading it to them.

I bought this book for my little sister and found myself enjoying it as much as she did during her story time. Explaining loss to a child is never easy but the author has found a way to do so using language a child can understand. The book focuses on the memories that we make with the important people and things in our lives and reminds us that they are never really gone. The book also reminds us that every act, whether it is a family barbeque or a simple game can help bind a family together. I recommend that every parent buy this book it helps turn a difficult topic into something uplifting.

Italian Constitutional Justice in Global Context is the first book ever published in English to provide an international examination of the Italian Constitutional Court (ItCC), offering a comprehensive analysis of its principal lines of jurisprudence, historical origins, organization, procedures, and its current engagement with transnational European law. The ItCC represents one of the strongest and most successful examples of constitutional judicial review, and is distinctive in its structure, institutional dimensions, and well-developed jurisprudence. Moreover, the ItCC has developed a distinctive voice among global constitutional actors in its adjudication of a broad range of topics from fundamental rights and liberties to the allocations of governmental power and regionalism. Nevertheless, in global constitutional dialog, the voice of the ItCC has been almost entirely absent due to a relative lack of both English translations of its decisions and of focused scholarly commentary in English.

This book describes the "Italian Style" in global constitutional adjudication, and aims to elevate Italian constitutional jurisprudence to an active participant role in global constitutional discourse. The authors have carefully structured the work to allow the ItCC's own voice to emerge. It presents broad syntheses of major areas of the Court's case law, provides excerpts from notable decisions in a narrative and analytical context, addresses the tension between the ItCC and the Court of Cassation, and positions the development, character, and importance of the ItCC's jurisprudence in the larger arc of global judicial dialog.

About the Author

Vittoria Barsotti is Professor of Comparative Law and Director of the PhD Program in Legal Sciences at the University of Florence. She has written books and articles on comparative law, constitutional law, and human rights.

Paolo G. Carozza is Professor of Law and Director of the Kellogg Institute for International Studies at the University of Notre Dame, and former President of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. He has written books and articles on international human rights law, European and Latin American legal traditions, and comparative constitutional law.

Marta Cartabia currently serves as a Justice on the Italian Constitutional Court. She was previously Professor of Constitutional Law at the University of Milan-Bicocca. She is a prolific and eminent constitutional law scholar in the field of individual rights and constitutional justice in the Italian, European, and comparative context.

Andrea Simoncini is Professor of Constitutional Law at the University of Florence where he is Director of the International Studies Program in the Legal Science Department. He has written extensively on constitutional law and federal-regional law in the Italian, European, and comparative context.

Nice book but a bit on the thin side.

My girls love these scholastic books. What better way to help them continue to learn than learning while having fun. The stuff in this book is great. My only disappointment is that this book is a bit thin compared to the other scholastic books like this I have bought. Overall, for the price and money, it's an OK buy.

About the Author

John Bambenek is a programmer and teacher with over ten years of experience. His work at the Internet Storm Center and the University of Illinois, as well as his contributions to SANS information management courses, will help him promote this book and give him a sound base from which to write.

Agnieszka Klus was born in Rzeszow, Poland and came here as a child. She lives in the northwest suburb of Chicago, but considers herself a Chicagoan. She is currently trying to get her Masters in Accountancy at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and also works as a system administrator at the Coordinated Science Laboratory.

A very handy reference

This little book is everything a pocket reference should be. grep and egrep are not hard to use, but there are quite a few valid combinations of options, and this book pretty much covers them all. If you want to find expressions in one or more files, this is the tool to use. It's easy to forget everything available, so this book puts everything in one place for you. There's even a section on an option of grep that is only valid with PERL, so you may or may not have access to it. The following is the table of contents since it is not listed in the product description. One word of warning - if you don't already understand regular expressions this book won't teach it to you. It is indeed just a quick reference for concepts you should already know. The advanced tips and tricks section is the only exception to that rule and is itself worth the price of admission.

Not what I hoped for

grep is such a tool that one uses continually every unix console session. Great to spend an evening reading up about that tool, just to get introduced to the more advanced uses. 75 pages would be plenty to tell something nice, not deal extensively with regular expressions. So quite some space to tell something new, right?

Wrong. Regular expressions keep on being the central focus of this book, despite being uncapable of telling how they really work. The examples of Advanced Use are how to match lines with IP-addresses and ISBN-numbers, AKA regular expressions. No word on how to make the use of grep itself nicer.

* On page 9., option -e is used without explaining what it does.
* Page 25. It seems like they want to show how to avoid a pipe from one grep to another, but they just show got rid of the cat statement. The text does not make sense, and there is no pointer to where to look in the book to get performance increase.
* p.60: '/' really should have been a '\'.
* In the discussion of command line options, nor of the environment variables, an explanation of the practical difference between 'auto' and 'always' has been omitted. I would have hoped for a discussion on how to use pagers like less with color support (No sweat to figure out yourself: exporting GREP_OPTIONS="--color always" and LESS="-R" works for me to retain the color marks).
* As the final words, the authors warn about using grep on a multitude of files, as this could run into the limits of the system. Of course, a combination of find and xargs is a more subtle and correct one, which does not happen to run into this limit. The authors suggest that one should rebuild the kernel to overcome this limitation. I have not tried it, but I havily syspect that this could be remedied with changing the allowed number of open files imposed by ulimit.

Except for these factual errors, the authors have mainly reiterated what is written in the man and info pages. I was hoping for some interesting tips on how to integrate the usage of grep in daily tasks. The book spends a 30 % of its space to explaining the special characters. This information can be found in a split second with 'man grep | grep -C2 "\^"'. The context options -A, -B, and -C dwell somewhere in obscurity, as they could have been used to show how they make sense while parsing logs, or text written by humans.

I imagine that this book does provide a nice introduction to the command. But if you find yourself navigating man pages regularly, and have encountered a regular expression before, there is not much to gain from this book.

Good Book on the Basics of REGEX & GREP

I needed a book that would teach me REGEX and how better to use grep/fgrep, but without having to learn PERL and JAVA. (ie. Master Regular Expressions contains over half the data relevant to other languages.)

This "grep Pocket Reference" did a good job of explaining the grep options in tandem with the it's Manual Page. Although few, I thought the examples near the end were great. However, the examples seemed to be themed on personal private data searching rather then something more relevant to a computer users -- but they could easily be converted.

This EBook needs some corrections (a reprint including errata?) as it contains some grammar or run-on sentences which conflict and provide incorrect data. Also, there's a sentence in the book stating, in effect, it's OK or legal to use fgrep to search other peoples EMail. I'm no lawyer, but this doesn't sound correct. Again, those few sentences probably need a little rewording.

All in all, besides the fact it needed a good proof reading -- the book taught me what I needed to learn about grep as it's manual page lacks examples and a certain amount of clarity. (Currently, grep's manual page is written like a specification rather then something focused towards a user, omitting example usage.)

(There is a small chapter on Perl REGEX. ie. --perl-regexp)

If you need a book to learn REGEX and have a little trouble with the GREP Manual Page, or don't want to read a huge book like Mastering REGEX, get this book for learning REGEX (aka BRE/ERE).

Also noteworthy, the MOBI formated EBook version of this "grep Pocket Reference" is the first readable MOBI EBook I've been able to read so far on my Kindle DXG. This book had few TABLE TAGS (or computer technical drawings/coding). And of the presented console/terminal text presented, it was readable unlike many other MOBI technical books I've tried to read.

Edited 2011.11.19: Also, GREP originates from the line editor called 'ed' (ie. command syntax: g/re/p) according to the author Robbins of the book sed & awk (2nd Edition). The third chapter of the sed & awk (2nd Edition) is devoted to regular expressions (grep), as sed & awk depend on this feature for searching.
