If you are a musician and you know much of anything about music licensing--if you belong to BMI or other PRO and know what they do; if you know what kind of license you need to record a cover song and put it on a CD--then this book is way too basic for you. I'm quite disappointed because the book is padded with forms that are readily available on line, and with Q&As of the usual type you hear at music conferences (Lots of gossip and name-dropping), but it really lacks the nuts-and-bolts of exactly how to get your music placed and sold.

While Christians tend to see the afterlife of the saved as primarily existence in the direct presence of God, with little elaboration of the physical conditions of heaven, Muslims have many detailed concepts about the physical characteristics of Paradise and its inhabitants, both human and non-human. The final chapter includes reproductions of numerous paintings that represent life in both Paradise and the Fire.

This book is a useful source of information for those curious about Muslim concepts of life after death. There is a lot more to it that the "72 virgins" that seem to be about the only bit of (mis)information that circulates in popular lore in America these days.

This book, like many other academic books from many publishers in recent years, sadly suffers from a lack of proofreading. It is riddled with small errors on many pages, and has a few larger ones too. Academic publishers, please go back to using editors and proofreaders!

I hate this book(It's so boring)

This book is bad. I personally don't like because it makes everything boring. I took another class that relates to this and we use a book called Programming logic and design and it's 3 times better than this books and does a great job at explaining code. If you are going to use this book for your class I wish the best.

controversial, heavy at times, but v good

The book is controversial. In part, this is because not many complete texts exist. In part, it is because Assyriology is studied by only a few people (all of whom know each other on first-surname terms). Sumerian is a tiny, tiny, nearly infinitesimal fraction of that. Divide a few by a lot and it's easy to see why there's a problem.

This means that all books on Sumerology will make assumptions that you should be wary of. Some more than others, as some aspects are better studied. You do not need to know the nuances of Sumerian to translate the poems and stories of Inanna, or the epic of Gilgamish, but obviously the more you know the richer the translations can be without silly mistakes.

As a guide to one of the paths Sumerologists have explored, this book is great. It has a lot of detail, key information on writing styles, the grammar, etc. It goes into all this in intense depth, so make a backup copy of your brain first.

It is not "the definitive guide" because there isn't one. It is one interpretation of the extant data, there are other books that are equally valid interpretations of the same data which differ on many points. No matter what you get, keep an open mind. If you get this with an eye to becoming an archaeologist in that region, be prepared to write the next edition.

This is exactly where hobbyists like myself need to start, presuming of course you already know Akkadian. This manual will not, however, complete your knowledge of sumerian, but is a very good introduction in terms of both Grammar and orthography. It's deductive method of explaining morphology and syntax in the contexts actual tablets or inscriptions is a very good hands-on learning experience, and it's commentary is very elaborate in explaining it's various points. Once you have read, reviewed and memorized the grammar, one should then move on to D. Otto Edzard's "Sumerian" grammar.

A Splendid Introduction to Sumerian

In the Manual of Sumerian, Hayes starts you off with a good introduction to what you're getting yourself into, in terms of signs, in terms of grammar and in terms of studying a language that is not fully understood even by its finest scholars. Once you hop into the lessons, though, the language comes fast. Other reviewers have noted how often you find yourself reading the same sentence, but given that the texts are drawn mostly from inscriptions this is hardly a surprise. It's not as though building cornerstones are generally used for avant-garde literature. However, there's something reassuring in this. It's genuinely neat to be four or five chapters in, flip ahead a little and discover you have some sense of what the text is about, even though you can also tell that you'd really better do the chapters in the middle to fill in the gaps.

The one warning to give about this text is that with relatively limited content, you won't be learning the whole of the language. You'll be learning, as I indicated, to read standard inscriptions. If you're wandering about a Sumerian site and find an as yet unnoticed brick, you'll have a good shot at understanding whether it came from a a temple, a bridge or a palace, who ordered its construction and which god it was dedicated to. If you find a tablet with a missing part of an old Gilgamesh story, you're going to need some help. That said, this is a wonderful introduction, all the more wonderful because you get both a lot of insight into the language and the experience of looking at ancient inscriptions and knowing, almost at a glance, what they're about.

For anyone who wants to find out what Sumerian is all about, I would highly recommend this as the place to start.

It was a great experience writing this book, it all started about a year back, we were toying with futuristic ideas that would make a great movie plot, and Forbidden Earth happened! Hope you enjoy it.

How did they create Biological Computers (BCs)?

Excellent novel for such a young author. I liked the character of Dylan the best. Kind of a person who gets the job done and does not speak much. The back story needs some developing and can actually be a good story for a prequel. The end seemed a bit sudden, but is a great one, nonetheless, and leaves the reader thinking what is to come...

Great novel by someone my age!

So I am in middle school, and I was very excited to read a novel written by someone my age. It had an interesting premise, and I was interested to read the book, even though I'm not a sci-fi fan. So during the last week of school, I easily devoured the book.
Sabina Anand is a great storyteller, but her writing needs some work. She should try to work more on putting the description in the narration, like saying, "Macy's brown eyes alighted on the beautiful sky" or "Dylan brushed back his floppy brown hair." That way you don't interrupt the story with describing a new character. There were also some spelling errors and grammar errors, but very few.
The plotline was good, though the two years between Macy's decision to settle with Dylan and Tim and Leslie's decision to go back to Forbidden Earth could have been handled over more efficiently. I'm glad that things didn't get easy for the characters for too long. They experienced plenty of setbacks, like Macey not being in the same area where the spacecraft first landed, and the cell phone connection being cut off.
Overall this was an excellent read, and I'm sure Sabina will be a great author. She could revise this novel and publish it again, or even write a sequel.
