One of the greatest little known secrets of WWII
By No Name Texan
This is a remarkable account. What is even more remarkable is how poorly known is this secret weapon. It was completely overshadowed by radar, which was a poorly kept secret, and the atomic bomb, which became a non-secret, and consequently while radar, the atomic bomb and other weapons were heavily discussed shortly after the war, this remained a secret until declassification in the mid 1970s. And even after that, it was eclipsed by the code breaking secrets released during the same period. Amazingly, the proximity fuse enabled US naval forces to act much more aggressively throughout the war, and no one among the public, even the sailors who were firing the shells fully understood what it was all about. The V1 threat was neutralized and no one knew this was what had done it. Late in the war in Europe, battles were won using this weapon, and essentially nothing was written about it. The secret was that well kept. Sadly, the public was so uninformed that these heroes, the author among them, received little public recognition like the icons of the Manhattan project. And even more sadly, probably all of the people who worked on the project are gone. Baldwin passed away in 2010.

The reason the secret had to be so closely held is that it wouldn't have taken much in terms of counter measures to neutralize the weapon. Because the fuse emitted a radio signal, the Navy went so far as to create other radio signals to confuse any enemy technician who might stumble upon the signal during a battle. The enemy could have easily jammed the signal if they knew. Also, the fuse could have relatively easily been duplicated and used against Allied forces, so extreme measures were used to prevent its capture. The security worked, and none of the Axis powers knew the weapon was being used.

The book itself is a slow read. The author broke the book into chapters of topics, each of which is developed approximately chronologically, but even within chapters, the author jumps around a bit in chronology, so one has to go back now and then to keep the timeline more or less straight. The author's organization to a degree reflects the organization of the project as it unfolded. There were many simultaneous activities underway by groups and individuals who were highly compartmentalized for secrecy. Because this account was written so late after the events, and because of this compartmentalization, weaving a chronological story from beginning of book to end would have been difficult. I am just cautioning the reader to not get frustrated and spend the time that is necessary with the book. It is worth the effort.

I think one of the things that I liked was the author's efforts to identify as many of the individuals and their roles as possible. This will enable other historians to more effectively put together an even more comprehensive account of the project. It was a mini-Manhattan type project involving hundreds or thousands of scientists and engineers and many companies. Tens of thousands of people worked on making the components, and women figure heavily into the operation because of their dexterity and patience fabricating the tiny objects. I now realize my mother may have been one of these women. She worked in an electronics plant doing quality control on small electronic parts, and she and her coworkers never knew what it was all about. I wish I had read this book before she passed away to show it to her and ask her whether this might have been what she was doing. I think she would have been extremely proud to have found that out.

For historians of WWII, this is must read. I only hope that some will advance this story and uncover more of the battlefield examples of the use of the fuse. It may have contributed to every major battle in the Pacific once it was introduced. Like an earlier reviewer, I wonder why this hasn't been made into a movie? The story is unknown to the public, but could be made more exciting than most fictional accounts one sees of war.

It is unfortunate this book appears to not be in print. I had to purchase a relatively pricey used copy. This makes it even more difficult for people to get access to this story.

Even though this can be a slow read, I recommend it highly. It represents a primary historical record because the author was there. He did a great job of weaving the contributions of others into the story, and this could greatly benefit future historians.

Saving our ships from suicide planes
By Amazon Customer
Not to take anything from the bravery of our WW II servicemen- we not only caught up with enemy technology but exceeded it. Ignore the Atomic bomb and B-29; look at ships that drop a ramp like a modern car ferry, at jeeps, or canned Spam. Most overlooked is the proximity fuze.
This book is a history of accelerated weapons research. In 1939, how did explosive shells detonate? By contacting something. An antiaircraft shell was a problem; no one wanted it to explode on return to the earth if it missed the plane overhead. The answer was a timer set before insertion in the gun. It would then explode at a certain altitude. At best, that was an estimate.
In great secrecy, English and U.S. scientists developed a radar fuze to sense the closest approach to an object and explode it. Testing was frustrating. While accelerated, fuzes arrived for Britain in time to shoot down V-1 'Revenge weapons'. In the Pacific theater, it was Kamikazes. Development was customized for each size of gun (and ships were equipped with many). Even production lines developed problems requiring new solutions. This was an excellent example of 'brain trusts' sharing research and improvements.
Read how the Allies dealt with battlefield surprises with these new fuzes. Our military rolled over vicious enemies by brushing aside their counter-attacks. I liked it.
If anything, the dry details of manufacturing the circuits, or pushing the limits of on-board batteries is boring. Finally, the Army and Navy received shipments of fuzes for certain size guns. But official reports shift back-and-forth between use of 'VT' shells at the battle of the Philippean Sea, Iwo Jima, Europe or Mediterranean making a hash of what could be an inspiring result. (minus two stars)

We live in a society that is awash with information, but few of us really understand what information is. In this Very Short Introduction, one of the world's leading authorities on the philosophy of information and on information ethics, Luciano Floridi, offers an illuminating exploration of information as it relates to both philosophy and science. He discusses the roots of the concept of information in mathematics and science, and considers the role of information in several fields, including biology. Floridi also discusses concepts such as "Infoglut" (too much information to process) and the emergence of an information society, and he addresses the nature of information as a communication process and its place as a physical phenomenon. Perhaps more important, he explores information's meaning and value, and ends by considering the broader social and ethical issues relating to information, including problems surrounding accessibility, privacy, ownership, copyright, and open source. This book helps us understand the true meaning of the concept and how it can be used to understand our world.

About the Series: Combining authority with wit, accessibility, and style, Very Short Introductions offer an introduction to some of life's most interesting topics. Written by experts for the newcomer, they demonstrate the finest contemporary thinking about the central problems and issues in hundreds of key topics, from philosophy to Freud, quantum theory to Islam.

Groundbreaking and visionary, but very short indeed
By Irfan A. Alvi
Leaving aside the possibility of minds, souls, and the like, people used to think that the ultimate "stuff" of the universe is matter. Then thermodynamics matured during the 19th century, culminating with Einstein's theoretical demonstration that matter can be converted to energy, thus rendering energy apparently even more fundamental than matter. Now, as a result of multiple streams of developments during the 20th century, we live in an age when information is increasingly being viewed as the true ultimate stuff. This is at once both immensely stimulating and perplexing: stimulating because the concept of information has far greater interdisciplinary unifying power than any concept which came before, but perplexing because the concept of information is very abstract and thus elusively slippery.

In this book, Luciano Floridi clearly makes an earnest effort to navigate the difficult terrain presented by the manifold concept of information, and I think he does commendably well. The flow of the book makes sense. He sets the stage by describing how information-saturated our lives have become, to the point where we can be described as "inforgs" living in an "infosphere." He then looks at the concept of information by progressing through increasingly wider contexts: information as data, the mathematical theory of communication of data, semantic aspects of information, physical information (laws of thermodynamics, Maxwell's demon, etc.), biological information (a nicely nuanced discussion), economic information (emphasizing game theory and also touching on Bayes' theorem), a rather creative effort (even if not quite convincing) to reformulate ethical theory from an informational perspective, and finally an epilogue arguing for both the necessity and possibility of merging the natural and manmade worlds.

This broad scope properly reflects most of the key contempary perspectives on information. The follow-up question is whether this breadth comes at the expense of depth, and I think the answer is both yes and no. On one hand, Floridi writes at a fairly high level and thus manages to pack in a good bit of detail; this demands significant concentration by the reader and will make the book hard to follow for readers without at least a little background in the topics discussed. But on the other hand, I did find that the majority of the topics cried out for a much deeper treatment, to the extent that it was sometimes difficult to clearly grasp Floridi's key points because his discussion was simply too brief. In that sense, the book whets the appetite rather than serving up a full meal, so I'm tempted to deduct a star. But it can be argued that the book has fulfilled its mandate of providing a "very short introduction," so let's be generous and stick with 5 stars.

Since this book does a good job of introducing a fundamentally important topic in a groundbreaking and visionary way, and since I don't know of any better book for that purpose, I highly recommend it.

Comparing Floridi to Seife and Luenberger
By Let's Compare Options Preptorial
This great little book is a quickly readable survey of information science, with an emphasis on philosophy and ethics rather than problem solving or business. Two other extremes (not counting the dozen wonderful Dover titles on information theory for under $5 which are certainly worthwhile) include:

1. Luenberger: Information Science

David's book is about $90 US and our databases show it to be the most used IS textbook, even though it is a 2006 edition. In about 450 pages, it covers the practical applications as well as theory of the entire field of information science, from Shannon to smart phones and economics, minus the "wow how cool is IS" as well as the "we're drowning in info and can't get up" spins.

2. Seife: Decoding the Universe: How the New Science of Information Is Explaining Everything in the Cosmos, from Our Brains to Black Holes

Also from 2006, available used for a penny on some Amazon third party offers, 296 pages.

Very Short Intro (VSI- Floridi) fits nicely between the two. Seife is a wonderful page-turner and a must have if you're into information and math. His "zero" book (Zero: The Biography of a Dangerous Idea was a best seller, and also is about 50c used-- an awesome survey of math. Seife covers both practical problem solving and "meta" issues, but is much less thick and ponderous than Floridi, which has to be studied a little more carefully to get the nuances (not a bad thing). But Floridi isn't all "heavy" -- he talks about a researcher in the "near future" (a million years from now) evaluating our current information leaps!

All three texts cover Shannon, but Floridi and Luenberger do so more with generality and reverence, whereas Seife goes into DEEP detail about redundancy, logarithms, the relationship of amplitudes/ signals to codecs (as in Shannon's connecting log forms to entropy), etc. including a great appendix ON logs. If you enjoy math as well as story telling, Seife delivers.

Floridi is of course much more "up to date" in stats (zettabytes!) etc. since he's more current, but you don't really gain or lose anything there, since much of Floridi is about challenging and re-defining at the conceptual, ideational and definitional levels. If you want detailed, applied, usable problem solving, get Luenberger, if you want a "can't put it down" fun read that touches on the fact that we're "really" living in the Matrix, 13th floor, Tron, etc.-- Seife is the ticket. Both Seife and Floridi give that "wow" feeling that we are really information living in information for the sake of, well, information! They both adequately portray the revolutionary wonder of moving from matter to energy to information in our world view, getting more and more universal (or at the risk of induction, which they both trash-- general), at each leap.

The difference is, Floridi is dry and methodical, Seife is fun and amazing, but you need a little more "math love" with Seife on the other hand. Luenberger is, well, a text. Yes, the best text BUT I include him here mostly for the readers that are looking for less wonder and philosophy and more practical "What does all this mean for careers, business, applications, search engines... etc. All three rate 5 stars, for what they intend to be.

Just out of reach
By Historied
I came to this book full of hope for a concise introduction to the field of information. What I found resembled one of those dreams when you are following someone around endless corridors without any clear idea of where they are going, and you can't quite catch up to the figure to ask them: 'where are we headed and for what purpose?' Perhaps the author's St. Cross College, Oxford founded in 1965 consists of Borgesian labyrinths? From time to time during the reading, I stopped to check the structure and content of the sentences and yes they were properly constructed sentences, and they did appear to have information content by the author's criteria. But as I resumed reading, there was a nagging voice saying 'so what?' I liked his map of the subject matter that he kept pointing out: 'you are here', but then I realized that this did not really help. Reading this book made me have no new thoughts, and being generative is one of my key criteria for awarding stars. Increasingly, I began to wonder if this is the future of what the author calls the infosphere. We will have almost infinite connectivity with unlimited numbers of deeply interesting people (and I sure from his bio that Luciano Floridi is intelligent and interesting), and we will exchange messages of considerably complexity, but with little emotive richness. Messages about messages, self referential solipsist stimulation and I am not sure that is how we want to live? And perhaps unfairly I ultimately felt like I had spent some hours in the company of a Train Spotter (called Foamer in the US) explaining the finer points of the locomotive numbering system. Phew! I did finish it. And I will go back to check I am not doing it an injustice. If someone can help me better understand the author's macro take on information, please write a review. It may just be me.

This was a ok book. one thing i liked about it is when rudolph save that family of rabbits. It was sad in the begining of the story because everyone was being so mean to rudolph. then when the other deer found out that he saved that family they loved him again. so this was a ok book after all.

Awwww - I love Rudolph!
By Avid Reader and Listener
This ebook was awesome - the original Rudolph story where he talks about being teased by other reindeer for his looks, then given the biggest honor a reindeer could have: leading Santa's sleigh. It's cool to read the original story - a few surprises from the TV show - and also there's another story included about what happened when his nose light went out! The rhyming is fun - good for families to read together (or out loud) too! Yay!

Great poems and Christmas music bonus!
By Kristi Richardson
This was a great listen! It includes the original poem written in 1939 by Robert May and published in a booklet by Montgomery Wards. I remember as a child going to the Montgomery Wards in Chicago, Illinois and besides Santa you could see Rudolph and get a gift for a boy or a girl. It was a highlight of my Christmas childhood memories.

The original poem is followed by a newer poem called Rudolph's Shiny New Year. This poem shows Rudolph losing his powers from whining and crying too much from all the teasing and bullying he endures. He feels he is no longer useful until he learns an important lesson.

The last part of the 30+ minutes are some beautiful Christmas and Holiday carols which include my favorite. "Up on the House Top".

I loved this short listen and it brought back many happy memories to me.

Hawks of the Sea (Will Eisner Library), by Will Eisner

In 1936, a 20-year-old artist using the name Willis B. Rensie jump-started the comic-book medium. Writing and illustrating an action-packed weekly serial called Hawks of the Seas-a pirate adventure series set in the 18th-century Caribbean-the artist created one dynamic strip after another, honing his storytelling craft and shaping the comics medium with each one. That artist was none other than comics grand master Will Eisner! From 1936 to 1938, Eisner's Hawks of the Seas weekly stories were translated into several different languages and distributed all over the world, and now they're collected here in this handsome hardcover edition. The stories themselves stand the test of time, as thrilling and exciting as they were almost 70 years ago. Featuring an introduction by comics veteran Al Williamson and a new foreword by Eisner himself.

Hawks of the Seas
By Daniel J. Mooney
From the golden era of adventure newspaper comics comes Hawks of the Seas. It is a weekly that ran from 1937 till 1939, created and drawn by a 20 year old Will Eisner. This book collects the entire surviving run of the series. The strips, apparently, have been culled together from a variety of sources, ranging all over the Americas. Finding and putting all together the proofs of an obscure newspaper comic from seven decades ago, is quite a feat unto itself, and thus I feel the books deserves kudos just for that.

Some of the prints are under the title of Aguila Azul (The Blue Eagle), which is how the strip ran in the Spanish translation. Another note is that story pages 3, 4, and 84 are missing, and that pages 10 and 17 are incomplete. But I found that it did not detract from my enjoyment or understanding of the story in any major way.

The stories revolve around a pirate, named the Hawk. He sticks out in pirating annals, because he's become a pirate in order to oppose the slave trade and all who prosper under it. Thus he takes on the role of the noble outlaw; a sea-bound Robin Hood type of sorts. The action has the usual assortment of evil pirates, corrupt officials, and damsels in distress. Ships explode, duels are fought, and there are daring nighttime raids on lonely forts in the Caribbean.

I went back and forth between 3 and 4 stars on this item. It certainly isn't Eisner's best work, but for the time it was rather different (which is why it probably didn't last). When I looked back over it, however I found a lot of old fashioned swashbuckling daring-do, which reminded me of old times, and a nostalgic wave overcame me. If this isn't likely to happen to you, then take this review as a three stars. But if you remember old strips and times like these then take it as a four.

The Machiavellian Moment: Florentine Political Thought and the Atlantic Republican Tradition, by J.G.A. Pocock

The Machiavellian Moment is a classic study of the consequences for modern historical and social consciousness of the ideal of the classical republic revived by Machiavelli and other thinkers of Renaissance Italy. J.G.A. Pocock suggests that Machiavelli's prime emphasis was on the moment in which the republic confronts the problem of its own instability in time, and which he calls the "Machiavellian moment."

After examining this problem in the thought of Machiavelli, Guicciardini, and Giannotti, Pocock turns to the revival of republican thought in Puritan England and in Revolutionary and Federalist America. He argues that the American Revolution can be considered the last great act of civic humanism of the Renaissance. He relates the origins of modern historicism to the clash between civic, Christian, and commercial values in the thought of the eighteenth century.

Brilliant
By R. Albin
This is a remarkable, though not easy to digest, book. Pocock traces the development of modern republican political theory from its birth in Renaissance Florence to the end of the 18th century. This book incorporates both broad structural analysis of the the unfolding of this tradition and a detailed readings of the major and quite a few minor contributors to this tradition. Pocock starts out by demonstrating that the Christian-Medieval tradition of western Europe was not equipped with the conceptual apparatus to develop a theory of republican governance. Intellectuals in Renaissance Florence then had to look back to the Classical writings of Aristotle, the historian Polybius, and other classical writers, to develop a system of thought that could justify and guide the life of city-states in Italy. An underlying theme that Pocock stresses throughout the book is the struggle of intellectuals trying to develop systems of government that would produce fulfillment and stability but constantly confronted with the insecurity and unstable nature of the real world. Another recurrent theme is the pressure to articulate republican theory constantly being confronted with new circumstances. The development of republican theory, particularly by the brilliant Machiavelli and Guicciardini, being prompted by the specific historical circumstances faced by the Florentine state. Machiavelli is really the pivotal figure, developing political theory unmoored from the divine. After tracing the development of Florentine theory, Pocock moves onto the development of republican theory in the very different circumstances of 17th century Britain. Here, theory had to accomodate not the problems of a city-state but an entire nation and changed significantly under the stimulus of the English Civil War. Pocock presents James Harrington as the key modifier and transmitter of the Machiavellian tradition and who in particular emphasized the role of property as the basis for republican stability. Pocock then moves on to the challenges of the 18th century with the confrontation of republican theory with an emerging commercial and imperial society. The final chapter deals with what happened when the American revolutionaries attempted to construct to a new society based on classical republican ideas. The failure of these ideas prompted the development of a new version of republican theory. Pocock's close analysis of individual thinkers is sometimes tough reading but ultimately rewarding. The analyses of individual thinkers are punctuated by general analyses that are invariably insightful and sometimes brilliant. Among other things, this is a basic book for understanding the intellectual background of the American Revolution and many important topics in modern history.

Birth and growth of the modern republic-- in a nutshell
By Bo K.
This is the best book that I have found to date that traces the development of the theory of the modern "res public" from Machiavelli and the Florentine city-state, to the Glorious revolution in 17th century England, to the foundation of the American republic.

The Machiavellian moment comes when the founders of a state realize that "virtue" can be dependent upon "contingency" at some point in the life of every government, and that the res public is the best method known to humans to manage both to the benefit of the citizens/body politic; "virtue" refers to the energy that the humanist writers of the period demanded of any honest citizen, in the vita activa; contingency is the weakness that enters into any human-created activity, given the incomplete nature of our knowledge.

This book is clearly written, and not difficult to digest if you come to it with some preliminary understanding, say, from quentin skinner's foundations of modern political thought.

I am finishing richard tuck's philosophy and government 1572-1651 which purports to analyze the development of the period's political thought up to Hobbes' publication of Leviathan in 1651, but it just isn't as rich or satisfying a work as this.

If you want to know why Machiavelli is so important, and understand his influence on the two greatest exemplars of republican thought since his time, this is without a doubt the book to read.

Well worth the time invested in reading!
By A Customer
Pocock has written a profoundly exhaustive study of Florentine republican theory in the time of Machiavelli, the Republic, and the Medici restoration. He painstakingly makes his argument that the roots of Machiavelli's thought are to be found more in the metaphysical world view of Thomism than in the teleological taxonomy of Aristotle. He goes on to argue that the aim of Machiavelli, and contemporaries such as Guicciardini, is the attainment of stability in secular time through the proper extension of civic rights. He then goes on to claim that this aim is followed by the architects of Eighteenth Century Anglo-American republicanism. This strong intepretation of Anglo-American republicanism may understate the impact of, for example, the Miltonian view of individual capacity for moral and political reasoning. However, it certainly is expounded well enough here to hold its own in any debate. In passing, Pocock makes liberal use of untranslated Italian text. While this is useful to the Renaissance specialist, it would be helpful had he included translations for those of us who bring no Italian to the table.

Review
"The book is based on the best research on reading and language development and gives readers an opportunity to see nationally renowned experts’ advice in their own words. But rather than a dreary summary of research findings, this book brings the knowledge to life by providing detailed descriptions and illustrations of the practical implications for classroom teaching. Just as teachers slowly and surely lead their children to becoming proficient readers, this book provides scaffolding and a suggested system of schoolwide support for teachers to develop their skills as reading teachers." (From the Foreword by Deborah Stipek 2007-09-17)

"This book presents an easy-to-understand approach to a complex skill by employing accessible concepts and a research-based conception of classroom assessment. For today’s and tomorrow’s elementary teachers, this book is mandatory reading!" (W. James Popham, Emeritus Professor 2007-12-11)

"Bailey and Heritage draw on a wealth of relevant research and their own work in classrooms to offer practice-oriented guidelines for ongoing assessment of children’s developing academic language literacy. They present clear definitions of concepts and constructs and clearly illustrate how formative assessment can be integrated into everyday instruction. The extended dialogues show how teachers can engage children in examining and talking about their own language development." (Mary J. Schleppegrell, Professor of Education 2007-12-20)

“In this important, readable, and practical book, Bailey and Heritage take us beyond what the research says to a clear set of principles for formative assessment in the language arts classroom. Everyone interested in improving reading and writing in our schools should read this book.” (Dylan Wiliam, Deputy Director 2008-02-19)

At odds with his life and angry at the world, Quinton heads to a new town for a fresh start in life. He spends his time getting mindlessly drunk, compulsively renting movies at a local video store, and befriending a homeless guy named King Henry. His one aim in life is to forget. He stumbles, quite literally, into a gym where an intense group of people is training to become Muay Thai fighters. The irresistible pull of fighting forces Quinton to focus all of his anger. Somehow, between squaring off against brutally efficient martial artists and falling for a beautiful religion-shopping video store employee, Quinton learns the glaring truth behind an age-old prizefighting mantra: there are many fights in life, not all of which occur in the ring.

The perfect book for young, angry souls or anyone who remembers being one.
By Daniel Ruiz
There are few novels that accurately and adequately capture what it is to be a young man. Too often, they are idealized caricatures of wit, intelligence, and determination. Too often, they are villainous, sloppy generalizations. Quinton Zanargo is that perfect balance between relatable, exceptional, noble, and pitiful. He is a young man that truly grows up, and we see the emergence of a man capable of navigating the world of perilous world of masculinity, even if he does not always understand it.
This novel is ideal for any angry young soul that wants to try to find peace in a world that often screams for us to find it yet offers us little help in actually doing so. The prose is lean like a fighter, hits like a head-kick, and is as subtle as the battle for position in the clinch. There are few books that will actually make you laugh at loud and keep you up at night wondering about everything it could really mean.
I cannot recommend this novel enough. If ever there was a worthy coming of age story for our age, this is it.

Have you ever felt like the whole world was out to get you
By andrew l kubai
Have you ever felt like the whole world was out to get you? I know I certainly did. When I was growing up, it seemed like there was a cabal stacked against me, and the only way out was to drink myself silly. That's why I wish more books like Rumble Young Man Rumble were out there. The protagonist, Quentin, goes through the exact same mental and emotional challenges that I did, but to a greater degree. Having a book like this would have been a great reminder that, at the end of that long, dark, hormonally challenged tunnel, there is a light. Whether you find it through kickboxing, writing (like myself), music, or any other format, the world will begin to grow and shrink all at once. This is why books like these are so important to people. Even at my age, I can look back fondly to the dark alleyways and crawlspaces of my own mind which I've escaped and feel joy at where I am.

I connected with this book because I feel like I WAS the main character
By W Tyler Paterson
I connected with this book because I feel like I WAS the main character. Muay Thai is a brutal sport, but it teaches so much more than violence. This book showcases the dedication, heart, warrior spirit, and spirituality that comes along with training. As someone who trains, this book nails it. Even if you don't, you can't help but become lost in the world of the fight.

Know thy basics
By Ronin
Well written and illustrated for understanding the basics of gung fu. Sometimes in class you may not pick up the subtle differences in foot position or receive conflicting advice on what the proper stance is. This book will help in sorting out the basics. The author also does a good job of referring the reader back to their instructor when a position is interpreted differently by various styles.
