Great for any Philosophy student

I recommend this book to anyone studying Philosophy. I majored in Phil in college and owe a great deal to "Socrates to Sartre" for helping me understand so many abstract concepts. It is writen in contemporary english so it is much easier to understand than many of the philosophers' own writing. The reader can follow the book as a historical text or use it as an encylopedia. All major theories by all major western philosophers are concisely broken down and explained. Examples are given. The book is structured in order of schools of thought and historical order. I swear one of my instructors must used this book for his lectures beacuse I used it for his classes and did very well. I don't mean to sound like I'm related to the author but this book is the best guide around.

Socrates to Sartre is a great book to use to understand the basic thought of any philosopher. The greatest strenghts of the book lie in the analysis of philosophy up to the modern period. In particular the book seems thin on the areas of existential philosophy and post-modern thought. Those limitations acknowledged, I would recommend this book for any person trying to crack the world of philosophy. Make sure you get another book if you want to understand the thought of 19th century or 20th century philosophers.

A Not So Simple Story Told Simply

Everyone has a story but only a few of us can tell it as well as Kevin has in The Plane Story. Reading his story was as entertaining as any story could ever be. After this book you are going to want pictures accompanying everything you read. The art is fantastic and the emotions of the characters jumps right off the pages! As a matter of fact, every element of this book works and makes The Plane Story a wonderful experience. In this format, of a graphic novel, it was refreshing to see the hero be heroic without punching someone out but by rolling with the punches.

A COMPLETE MUST, A REAL WINNER

Reading this book and taking it all in gave me one of my most wonderful days so far of 2011. I couldn't put it down. What a joy and a wonder that someone, Sacco, could sit down, dream such a thing and then execute it to such startling and fresh perfection. Along the way there are lessons to be learned, but they are never preachy and always delivered in the most charming and bittersweet package. The drawings alone pull you in and are worth the price of admission. Please treat yourself to a most inventive and unusual experience. Don't miss this one!

a good story very well drawn

This autobiographical graphic novel really took me by surprise.... A voyage of self discovery by a young artist which, in the process, illuminates a few generations of his family, is a complex story told with simplicity and insight. The art functions very well in its storytelling requirements, but many parts -- especially the parts set in Europe -- are visually fascinating just as well executed and evocative illustrations. Kevin Sacco manages to tell this multi-dimensional story, make you really care about the protagonist (himself) and tied it all together at the end. His virtuosity is impressive, but more than anything, he tells a very good story with memorable characters. Highly recommended.

"Hey, Jason," Broderick said, "Check out this watch I got." He handed it to Jason, who examined it quietly. Jason tended to treat Broderick with the respect of an equal, but Broderick intimidated him sometimes. The oldest boy was very outgoing and popular at his school, and for a junior highschooler that was a feat. "Watch what it does when you press that thing on top down!"

Jason good-naturedly complied.

Click. Suddenly the hands on the face of the watch were spinning very, very fast, and in the wrong direction. Jason blinked and watched, oblivious to what was happening to him as this was taking place. He squinted and his brow furrowed, and he looked up at the young adolescent standing over him with an expression of confusion on his face. Before he was able to get any words out, he shrank. Quickly.

In another moment Jason was in a tent of a t-shirt and sitting in bluejeans that enveloped his waist loosely, like a sleeping bag, that draped over the chair. Broderick casually retrieved his watch from the small child's lap as Jason looked up in astonishment to ask, "What you do?" Jason could not believe the sound of his own voice, a piping little-boy mewl.

Broderick sat down, smiling affectionately at his baby babysitter. "That's what this watch does, Jas'n. It can make somebody grow older or younger. And it just made you really little." He put the watch back into his pocket, and folded his arms on the table as he spoke.

"Bu' why me?" Jason asked, becoming more and more frantic. "Howcome? I wan' be big!"

Broderick clucked his tongue paternally. "Aw, don't be mad, Jason. I didn't do it to be mean, I just don't wanna be babysat anymore. So I get to babysit you now. I hope you know what this means. You better be good." He raised one eyebrow as he said this, with a look that asked Jason if he was about to challenge this young man's newfound authority.

Little Jason's eyes widened. Less than an hour after he'd walked in the door the situation had gone completely out of his control. One moment he was dutifully carrying out his responsibilities to look after the boys and the next he was nothing more than a child, a toddler at best, and it looked as though he would be spending the rest of the night completely under Broderick's control. His lower lip started to tremble as the magnitude of his situation started to dawn on him. "Wh- what.. what you gonna do wiss me?" he asked fearfully.

super cute story

I liked this. A fantasy story in which a 19 year old boy is forced to trade places with the youngster he's babysitting. Very innocent type of story, no sexual innuendos. Just innocent, loving, babying of a 19 year old boy in a 2 year old's body.

It wasn't entirely exciting, or amazing in any other way. If I had two words to describe it: Cute and Pleasant. It was a nice story.

Thomas R. Packard teaches administration and social policy courses in the School of Social Work at San Diego State University and conducts research and consultation projects through the Academy for Professional Excellence in the SDSU School of Social Work. For twenty-five years he has been an organization development consultant specializing in human service and government organizations, including six and a half years in the City of San Diego's Organizational Effectiveness Program, which he managed for one and a half years. He has published articles on his consulting projects and the results of his research in the areas of organizational effectiveness and the quality of working life. He has been the director of two community-based human services organizations and has been a program evaluator for the County of San Diego. He received his doctorate in social welfare at UCLA and is a Certified Social Work Manager.

Michael D. Lewis, Executive Director, Educational World Charities, Chicago, is Professor Emeritus of Counseling and Psychology at Governors State University. For more than thirty-five years he has consulted with numerous national and international corporations with regard to the implementation of their employee assistance programs. As the originator of the community counseling concept, he has advised educational institutions around the world in countries as diverse as Israel and Botswana. He has co-authored two other Brooks/Cole texts.

Description not accurate

The information on this book said it was in good condition however when it arrived the pages were worn from water damage. The book is also worn on the sides and many of the pages are permanently folded. The description was not accurate as to the books actual condition. This book is in poor condition. After meeting with my professor it was advised that we purchase and keep the book however this copy is in such bad condition that I would not keep it.

It takes 3 pages to say what could be said in 3 paragraphs, so it is a mind-numbing read. (And I LOVE to read.) Needs more case study examples.

Great overview of HS program structure!

This text is exceptionally priced for the content. Much of the information I have learned in my experience as a human services professional, yet many of my classmates were new to the field and noted it was very helpful. I especially enjoyed the chapters on budgeting and program evaluation, as those are my weakest areas due to lack of experience.
