Introduction to Genomics, by Arthur M. Lesk

Our genome is the blueprint to our existence: it encodes all the information we need to develop from a single cell into a hugely complicated functional organism. But how do we identify the genes that make up our genome? How do we determine their function? And how do different genes form the regulatory networks that direct the processes of life?

Introduction to Genomics is a fascinating insight into what can be revealed from the study of genomes: how organisms differ or match; how different organisms evolved; how the genome is constructed and how it operates; and what our understanding of genome structure and function means in terms of our future health and wellbeing.

Thoroughly revised and brought up to date, the second edition features:

* Coverage of the latest techniques and developments in the field

* Rich pedagogy: End-of-chapter exercises, web-based problems ("weblems"), and lab assignments; "Special Topic" boxes; engaging case studies new "Ethics" boxes exploring the ethical issues surrounding the study of genomics; highlighted key terms; and an end-of-book glossary

* A larger format provides greater clarity to the text and accompanying figures

* Five new chapters, including one dedicated to metabolomics

* An updated Companion Website (www.oup.com/uk/orc/bin/9780199564354) offering a range of resources, including figures from the book in electronic format, answers to end-of-chapter exercises, hints to end-of-chapter problems, a guided tour of web sites in genomics, and rotating figures

The field of genomics is enabling us to analyze life in more detail than ever before; and Introduction to Genomics tackles this conceptually challenging--and fascinating--subject in a clear, lucid way.

Review from previous edition: "This is an excellent book for students studying this exciting and fast paced subject. It has a number of chapters covering all aspect of genomics, from comparative genomics and evolution to mapping, sequencing and databases through to microarrays and proteomics, finally bringing it all together with systems biology. Suitable for final year undergraduates and masters students, it will also make a good reference book for PhD students" --Dr Dawn L. Arnold, University of the West of England

"This is a very versatile textbook that offers a good overview of genomics in different areas of biological research. It is an excellent introduction for students from different degrees who have an interest in genomics and its underlying techniques." --Dr Thomas Caspari, Bangor University

"Arthur Lesk is an eloquent writer. I am impressed by his use of specific examples, analogies, and humour to illuminate scientific principles. His writing in Introduction to Genomics is fluid and easy to read." --Dr Daniel G. Peterson, Mississippi State University

"Introduction to Genomics provides an excellent, broad and comprehensive overview of genomics research in biology. The field of genomics is highly technology driven and moves extremely fast and this book stands out in translating all this technological information into biological, meaningful concepts. It is highly appropriate to support genomics education to undergraduates." --Dr Dick Roelofs, VU University, Amsterdam

Well written but for biologists
By I Teach Typing
Because I do biostatistics for a living and it has been decades since my last formal biology class, I got this book to help me understand the biology of modern high-throughput genomics research. I am impressed with the writing. The author's presentation of history and the framing of ethical issues could not be better. Unfortunately for people like me the author assumes that you have a background in molecular cellular biology. Many terms are not defined or defined long after they first appear. Because the writing is excellent you can usually read through the sections with undefined terms with the help of the web but it is a slow difficult read. The index is good but there is no glossary. The web support for the book is fair (with expanded graphics and answers to some problems) but not really great. There are questions that are supposed to be answered using the web (like how the field has grown since the book was published) but the publisher does not provide hyperlinks to support those questions. With a glossary for non-biologists and better web support this would be an ideal book for everyone interested in the field. Without those features, it is still very good.

Best introduction to genomics
By Pedro V. Marcal
The book takes the reader gently through the intricacies of genomics. It is a easy read for the computer scientist with little background in Bio-chemistry. The genetic material is always introduced and illustrated with examples before its importance in the scheme of things is explained. I highly recommend this book.

Not very pedagogical
By Raman
As a newcomer to the biological sciences, I found this book not to be very pedagogical. From the very beginning, it assumes too much knowledge to be really self-contained - I was forced to Google terms (like Alu, an important transposable element in the human genome) that were left undefined from almost the very first page. And it's not that the level is uniformly too high for me, as it rehashes things like the central dogma of biology that are familiar from grade school. The purpose in this age of buying a paper book is to have something self-contained enough to avoid having to go down a long bunny hole of Internet searching. I found the uneven assumed background to be disappointing.

Its pages are full of colorful boxes containing relatively unhelpful summaries of the main text and over-numerous digressions. But there's enough new material in these boxes to make them necessary for understanding subsequent text, so you can't skip them. Thrashing between the text and these boxes slows me down. Many of the illustrations are non-essential photographs or poorly cropped screenshots. It suffers from many of the sins of bad K-12 textbooks, but given the harder material, it's even more painful to read.

That said, it covers a lot of useful material.

Review
"A fantastic companion book to a fantastic movie...The Art of Zootopia is such a treat in the way that it not only revisits the movie's delightfully heartwarming characters and fantastic art, but gives us an engaging look at what went into the making of Zootopia. The book starts with author Jessica Julius describing the movie's original story pitch - a 1960s spy story - and how it evolved over four years into the modern day tale of underdogs, prejudice, and fighting for justice for all. She gives us the scoop on how the characters were developed (balancing a feminine yet tough, naïve yet sharp, optimistic yet challenged bunny cop isn't so easy!), shows us amazing "sets" I don't even remember in the fast-moving film, and she lets us in on all kinds of fun details, like the fact that it took eight months to get the various animals' fur just right (color, texture, and direction of fur growth takes more contemplation than I realized). We are also privy to many sketches and scenes that were eventually cut from the film...The Art of Zootopia is both a captivating companion book to the movie, as well as a stand-alone coffee table book that doesn't need any knowledge of the movie to be appreciated."
-Wink Books

"I had very little expectations one way or the other from it, but wound up enjoying Disney's latest animated feature immensely, which made digging into The Art Of Zootopia even more of a delight. As we've come to expect with these lovely hardcover tomes, it's packed with design and development artwork and insight into the creation of the film."
-A Site Called Fred

"If you liked Zootopia and (like me) you love seeing what goes into making a movie, you'll love this book. It's filled with concept art and stories about how the movie came to be: for instance, it started off as a spy caper featuring a bunny spy. There's so much thought that went into the design of everything from buildings to vehicles to clothing, and this book gives you the opportunity to get a closer look at it all. There's a chapter on each of the sections of Zootopia, like Tundratown and Little Rodentia-perfect for poring over those blink-and-you-missed-it details from the film."

A beautiful companion to a wonderful film. Highly recommended.
By Parka
[[VIDEOID:87445250c48c7b00cb9561d7f0a04ca8]]Zootopia is one of the best movies for me this year and it's only March. This companion artbook too is a gem.

This wonderful 160-page hardcover artbook features the concept art for the characters, environments and props that make up the world of Zootopia. If you thought that the city was busy with so many things going on, well, this book will delight you with additional environments and characters that weren't even included in the film.

The artworks are so beautiful. I love character designs and the variety. The artists really nailed the look and in the film, the animation is done so well, so believable. I've so many favourite characters, Judy, Nick, Sloth, Bogo, Clawhauser, Yax, Gazelle and the dancing tigers, and of course Mr Big and many more. LOL.

I can't praise all the artists enough. Some of the highlights to me are drawings from Matthias Lechner, Cory Loftis, David Goetz and even the co-director Bryon Howard is also a fantastic artist.

There are many environment artworks included, some presented with breathtaking details and oh so beautiful lighting. You get to read about the effort and thought that goes into the production and design of everything that's shown on screen. All the boroughs and locations are included, namely Downtown, Rainforest District, Savanna Central, Little Rodentia, Sahara Square, Tundratown and Cliffside. And there are several pages of discarded art for an amusement park and a stadium.

This book is just packed with wonderful art like how Zootopia is filled with so much life. This is definitely one of the best artbooks for this year.

Most highly recommended.

Quality of the Kindle version is terrible
By S.L.Belden
Art of Zootopia is a fantastic book. 5 starts for the book itself.

Unfortunately, the image quality of the ebook version is absolutely unacceptable. The pictures are very small and terribly compressed. Most of the text in the images is completely unreadable. The pictures are just a blurry mess of JPEG artifacts. Even if you view the full-size image by long-pressing on the picture, the quality is still the same. I understand that Amazon wanted to keep the filesize of the book small, but unfortunately they completely destroyed the thousands of beautiful images in this book in pursuit of that goal.

If you want to get an idea of how pathetic the ebook looks, look at the sample images you get when you click on the book's cover at the top of the page. The actual ebook is nearly that bad.

If a new edition of the ebook is released with image quality comparable to the print edition, I will happily buy this again and give the book 5 stars. But until then, I can't recommend the Kindle edition to anyone.

Seriously, get the hardcover. JPEG artifacts all over the ebook.
By J.I. Vicuña
Got the Kindle version, since the hardcover is out of stock (and looks like it'll stay that way for a while), but the really awful compression makes it absolutely worthless. Bought the storybook for my nephew last week, and while not perfect, the pictures were beautiful. This one is just plain awful.
Wish I could get a refund on it.

NC Nurse Aide I Textbook
By AmberB
The book was in excellent physical condition - binding, pages, corners, etc. The only bad thing was that it had been highlighted quite a bit and the answers to the test were already circled. However, we are not using the test in class, so for the price, I am satisfied with the book. A brand new book would have been $100. Fast shipping.
