Always, Yes Always, Expect Miracles!: A Compilation Of Inspirational Articles And Thoughts From The 'Wright Place'., by Kassie Wright

Many of us simply don't have time in our busy lifestyles for anything spiritual. We don't set aside 'me' times. Often we skip reading 'Inspirational' stuff because we rationalize that we have more important things to do. I was one of those people. This was one of those things.

Too busy to read any self-help or inspirational stuff, let alone 'Law of Attraction' books. I thought I was above that. I didn't need self-help. At least, not until Miracles started to happen.

When things seem to be as bad as they can be, if we look within, we all can discover 'The Power'. Each one of us has it. It exists within us all. It's love. And when we become aware and conscious, we can feel the energy.

We can use this energy to guide us through our life. To find happiness and peace. The Power doesn't exist outside. It lives within our hearts. Understand the Universal Laws and use them to design the life of your dreams.

Set yourself up to receive everything you always wanted in life. Once you begin to see the light, you'll never go back to darkness. Surround yourself with positive people. And remember, you 'get what you give'.

And always, yes always, EXPECT Miracles!

Expect to be uplifted!
By Steven Lane Taylor
With the huge number of books that have already been written about the Law of Attraction, you might wonder what makes this book different. The answer is its author. Although there are a lot of authors who are considered to be experts on manifesting and conscious creation, few exhibit the unabashed excitement and enthusiasm that Kassie Wright has for this subject. You can't help but be uplifted by Kassie's charm, wit, and exuberant writing style. Enjoy!

It felt so good to read this uplifting and inspiring book! Kassie's words reached out and "grabbed" me from the first sentence - it is very easy to read and hard to put down. I sincerely recommend this book to everyone and I'm very much looking forward to Kassie's second book!

An amazing, inspirational read for anyone wanting to learn to creat their own happiness
By sdtallant
I actually became friends with Kassie through her website and subsequently purchased and read her book. Honestly, I've read it a couple of times, highlighted pertinent parts and refer back to it from time to time when I need a boost! For someone who has faced significant trials in her own life, she is charming, witty, upbeat and always positive:) Kassie has been a wonderful role model for me as a fellow stroke survivor and was an inspiration to me & during the time I suffered with major depression after my strokes. We became friends online, as I live in Mississippi and Kassie lives in Canada, but that never stopped her from reaching out to a stranger to give me support and hope. She was always available to chat via email or on facebook and we actually even talked on the phone! I will always love and appreciate her for throwing me a lifeline & giving me hope at one of the darkest times in my life. She is an awesome friend and a truly amazing woman. She actually inspired me to take my focus off of myself and to start helping others. I did this by becoming an assistant administrator on a stroke survivors website and it was the beginning of me "finding my purpose" again, and, finally, finding my passion in life. As I can no longer work as a paralegal after 25 years. Being an admin on the stroke survivors website gave me back my sense of purpose and a reason to get up every day! It became my "job" and helping others, helped me as well in overcoming my depression and subsequently turning my life around for the positive. Kassie has an amazing insight and shares many very helpful ideas and personal stories on how to think more positively and attract positive energy rather than letting negative energy pull you down! As a matter of fact, this book is a very "easy read" and I'd highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn to think more positively and create their own happiness!:) As someone who was wallowing in self-pity and negativism after my strokes, I am a testament to the fact that this book does just what it says; teaches you how to expect miracles and to never give up on yourself or your dreams. Thank you so much Kassie, for your friendship, support and inspiration. You'll never know how much you have meant to me and how much you helped me in the process of accepting my strokes, not letting them define me and changing my life for the better. I'm happier and more content with my life now than ever before and I truly belive that the best is yet to come. God bless you my dear, sweet friend!:) Much love always...

If an entire nation could seek its freedom, why not a girl?

As the Revolutionary War begins, thirteen-year-old Isabel wages her own fight...for freedom. Promised freedom upon the death of their owner, she and her sister, Ruth, in a cruel twist of fate become the property of a malicious New York City couple, the Locktons, who have no sympathy for the American Revolution and even less for Ruth and Isabel. When Isabel meets Curzon, a slave with ties to the Patriots, he encourages her to spy on her owners, who know details of British plans for invasion. She is reluctant at first, but when the unthinkable happens to Ruth, Isabel realizes her loyalty is available to the bidder who can provide her with freedom.

From acclaimed author Laurie Halse Anderson comes this compelling, impeccably researched novel that shows the lengths we can go to cast off our chains, both physical and spiritual.

From School Library Journal
Grade 6–10—Set in New York City at the beginning of the American Revolution, Chains addresses the price of freedom both for a nation and for individuals. Isabel tells the story of her life as a slave. She was sold with her five-year-old sister to a cruel Loyalist family even though the girls were to be free upon the death of their former owner. She has hopes of finding a way to freedom and becomes a spy for the rebels, but soon realizes that it is difficult to trust anyone. She chooses to find someone to help her no matter which side he or she is on. With short chapters, each beginning with a historical quote, this fast-paced novel reveals the heartache and struggles of a country and slave fighting for freedom. The characters are well developed, and the situations are realistic. An author's note gives insight into issues surrounding the Revolutionary War and the fight for the nation's freedom even though 20 percent of its people were in chains. Well researched and affecting in its presentation, the story offers readers a fresh look at the conflict and struggle of a developing nation.—Denise Moore, O'Gorman Junior High School, Sioux Falls, SD

From Booklist
*Starred Review* In the spring of 1776, Isabel, a teenage slave, and her sister, Ruth, are sold to ruthless, wealthy loyalists in Manhattan. While running errands, Isabel is approached by rebels, who promise her freedom (and help finding Ruth, who has been sent away) if she agrees to spy. Using the invisibility her slave status brings, Isabel lurks and listens as Master Lockton and his fellow Tories plot to crush the rebel uprisings, but the incendiary proof that she carries to the rebel camp doesn’t bring the desired rewards. Like the central character in M. T. Anderson’s Octavian Nothing duet, Isabel finds that both patriots and loyalists support slavery. The specifics of Isabel’s daily drudgery may slow some readers, but the catalogue of chores communicates the brutal rhythms of unrelenting toil, helping readers to imagine vividly the realities of Isabel’s life. The story’s perspective creates effective contrasts. Overwhelmed with domestic concerns, Isabel and indeed all the women in the household learn about the war from their marginalized position: they listen at doors to rooms where they are excluded, and they collect gossip from the streets. Anderson explores elemental themes of power (“She can do anything. I can do nothing,” Isabel realizes about her sadistic owner), freedom, and the sources of human strength in this searing, fascinating story. The extensive back matter includes a documented section that addresses many questions about history that readers will want to discuss. Grades 7-10. --Gillian Engberg

An amazing historical novel!
By L. K. Messner
CHAINS by Laurie Halse Anderson tells the story of Isabel, a slave trapped in New York City in the early days of the Revolution. Sold to Loyalists when her former owner dies, she's offered the chance to spy for the Patriots. But does their talk of liberty really include her? What about the British, who promise freedom to slaves who join their fight against the rebels?

This book is impeccably researched in a way that not only convinced me I was getting "the real deal" as far as the historical details are concerned but also transported me straight back into the 18th century. Some historical novels that have tackled this issue in the past have made it overly simple, but CHAINS is different. The historical context isn't simplified, the Patriot cause isn't glorified, and the characters are flawed, complex, and rich. As a reader and as a teacher, I am in serious book-love. As soon as I read the advance reader copy, I made plans to use this novel in my 7th grade classroom. CHAINS is a well-researched look at choices made by individuals during the Revolution, a coming-of-age story for a girl and a nation, and an absolute page-turner. It's everything that historical fiction ought to be.

Powerful perseverance
By James Hiller
The heroine in Laurie Halse Anderson's gripping new middle level children's book, "Chains" is a thirteen year old slave named Isabel, headstrong, fierce in her determination to keep her epileptic sister Ruth with her, intuitive, and strong. What might fell the mightiest of people only serves to strengthen Isabel, time and time again, proving that determination was much needed during this turbulent time in our nation's history. "Chains" is the children's book of the year. It's that good.

Anderson's blending of a slave story with the the Revolutionary War and the battle of New York creates a story ripe with possibilities and is fresh and new. At the beginning of the story, Isabel and Ruth attend the funeral of their former owner, thinking that a will would give them freedom. Alas, it was not to be. An unscrupulous relative sells off the girls to the first customers, a pair of England loyalists named Lockton, who transport the pair to their New York home to serve them.

Immediately off the boat, Isabel befriends a spritely lad Curzon, who begs to employ her in the cause of the American Revolution, playing brilliantly on the fact that white society deemed black slaves to be invisible. Only wanting her freedom, Isabel promises nothing but soon delivers, after learning of a plot to kill General Washington. When that doesn't give her freedom, she begins to mistrust the patriots' cause, and learns of the British claim to ensure freedom to any slaves that would join up against the revolution.

What makes this book novel is a slavery story set, not in the south, but New York City, which naturally leads to the discussion of how slavery was in our early history throughout the country and not just in one area. It also plays with the themes of which "side" in a war is the good side? Is there a good side or a bad side in a battle? We are taught that the British are the bad guys. Would you feel that way if you were a slave and could get freedom from them?

Many events transpire in this amazing book, but just look at the themes that crop up so far: racial invisibility, the British as possibly the "good guys" in the Revolution, the horrors of slavery against the strength of the people who suffered under it. Any of these themes would be a rich discussion to have with kids. Books like these tend to make the history we all learned in school much more real, more deeper, than just a series of dates and numbers to remember. We forget that history is made up of stories, of sides, and "Chains" allows some gentle exploration of those themes.

This is the first book I've read of Anderson. Her writing style is brief, fast paced, and complete. As a teacher, I appreciate the short chapters that pack a lot of story into a few pages. This would be an excellent read aloud book for any fourth grade classroom or higher, who are studying these issues in the class. I would love to use this book as a literature study, when it become available in paperback. And I'm now officially a fan of her work, and can't wait to delve into her other books.

Why the Newbery committee passed this stunning novel up is beyond me. I've read the current winner of the Newbery, The Graveyard Book, and while I found it to be interesting and intriguing, in my opinion, Chains soars above and beyond this book. If you are a teacher, buy this book now. It's really that good.

I am 11 years old and I liked this book because it writes from a first person perspective and that makes it more fun to read at least for me because you can tell what their feelings are. I also think the end of the book sets it up perfectly for the second book, Forge. The author clearly did a lot of research for this book and the next, which makes the book even more realistic even though the most of the characters aren't real. I also like that she did incorporate some true figures.

Finally, the war to retake the Fables’ Homeland commences. But not before a couple of set-up yarns. “Kingdom Come,” drawn by Niko Henrichon more loosely and cartoony than main-story artist Mark Buckingham would have, tells how the torch Boy Blue has long carried for Rose Red is snuffed out, and “Skulduggery” is a hostage-rescue thriller with Cinderella as the ruthless rescuer. The rest of the book is the war, which is satisfyingly heroic and gritty but, as it happens, not the grand finale of the Fables saga. A further volume of denouement is promised. Goody! --Ray Olson

One of the best volumes in the series, fully lived up to my expectations.
By Chip Hunter
Considered the conclusion to the first major story arc of the Fables saga, WAR AND PIECES tells of the long-expected confrontation between the free Fables and the Adversary. This is where the story from the very beginning has been heading, so needless to say there was a lot of build-up and expectations for this one. I think it says a lot that this volume has a 4.5-star rating here on Amazon, despite its being subject to such high hopes by faithful readers. Most of your favorite characters are featured on center stage here, including Boy Blue, Bigby, Prince Charming, and Cindy. As you'd expect, this one is absolutely full of action, action, and more action, and compared to other Fables volumes, lacks a bit on the character development side of things. Still, a few personal interactions are highlighted here, including the potentially-budding(?) romance between Boy Blue and Rose Red. Besides that though, the rest of the book tells action-packed stories of the 'shooting war' with the Adversary. Unlike some of the other reviewers, I was totally satisfied by the way the war was detailed and the way it turned out. Somewhat predictable, but a joy to read. Fully lived up to my expectations (which were high). As far as I'm concerned, this would have been a perfectly reasonable place to conclude the series, but I'm obviously glad it has continued. Highly recommended!

A glorious ending to the FABLES main arc
By Robert Moore
Before commencing with my review, I have to note that FABLES could well become the next TRUE BLOOD. The latter is the highly successful HBO television series, which adapted the wonderful Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris for the small screen. About a month before I write this ABC put a new television series based on FABLES into production. The people in charge of the production and pilot are the people behind the interesting but unsuccessful series SIX DEGREES. Hopefully the pilot will thrill and enchant the top brass at ABC and FABLES will become a primetime series on ABC. I have to confess that at the moment I have a hatred for ABC that is deep and strong, due to their almost unforgivable cancellation of PUSHING DAISIES, but a TV series based on FABLES would go a long way towards making me forgive them.

WAR AND PIECES pretty much brings us to the point that we always knew that FABLES would reach, the war between the Fables and the Adversary. From the very first issue any perceptive reader knew that this moment would come. What is somewhat surprising is that the series will not cease with the resolution of the war. But just as some friends of mine refuse to watch individual episodes of either LOST or 24, preferring instead to watch them in one big chunk on DVD, so I refrain from getting the individual issues of FABLES, instead buying each collected volume. So I won't know what happens next until next August when the 12th volume in the series is published. Meanwhile, Willingham's FABLES has become quite the franchise. Not only is there the possible new ABC series, there are a couple of spin offs in the offing, including a Peter Piper series and a miniseries involving that wonderful superspy Cinderella. The fifth volume of JACK OF FABLES has had its publication date announced, even before the fourth volume has been published. So, even if the main FABLES comic were not to continue (though it is), it seems certain that it will be a long, long time before we are without new comics based upon the FABLES universe.

This was just a glorious set of stories. There is always the danger when anticipating the end to a major story arc that it will be disappointing. These were just a delightful series of issues. We'd had a brief taste earlier of Cinderella as a super spy and it was delightful to have her reprise that guise. On a mission to retrieve an all-important package at the southern tip of South America we get to see her in all her unexpected glory. Some of the things we see various Fables do are wonderfully congruous with what we already knew about them, but the whole idea of Cinderella as a Jane Bond character is so out of whack with everything else we know about her to be delightful, not unlike Goldilocks as a murderous and slutty rogue. Then the actual war is wonderfully inventive. Using magic carpets as ballast to keep a wooden ship airborne seems very much like something the Fables would do. And the heroic demise of the unceasingly selfish Prince Charming is delightfully out of character. As with all the previous FABLES books, this one is filled with endless surprises and unanticipated twists. It is all so very good that even though it would have been a natural place to bring the entire series to a close, I'm quite delighted that Willingham decided not to.

Except for SANDMAN, this has to be my all time favorite comic series. It is exceptional for getting better and better as it has gone along. Early on I felt that some of the volumes were somewhat hampered for attempting to emulate one or another genre (for instance, the first volume was a whodunit, and all the weaker for that). But it really has ceased imitating other genres and found its own voice. I hope that we are a long, long way from the end. Hopefully by the time that Vol. 12 is published in August 2009, we will have heard that ABC has pulled the trigger on a FABLES TV series.

The One in Which the War Concludes: And Boy, Is This A Grand Climax!
By Mir
Others have posted in detail about the basis for the series and the segments of this volume, so I'm gonna skip the spoilers.

I will say this: It's all been leading up to this big, final series of espionage adventures and world-spanning battles. We see how the war is won...and by whom. It's satisfying and it's exciting and it's sad, too.

This is my fave ongoing comic book series, bar none. It's been hard waiting for the bound paperbacks (rather than reading one issue at a time), but it's always worth it. This series is well-written, well-drawn, and always full of twisty, folklorish-retelling fun.

Boy blue shines here (although he's not having an easy time of it in more ways than one), as does Prince Charming (whether you've loved or hated his complex, conceited, but courageous self). Cinderella, er, I mean "Cindy," is kickbutt great as she does her wicked-good spy thing! The battle strategies are fun to follow. And the showdown between the Big Bad Emperor and one of my fave Fable characters ends with a lovely humorous twist. :)

If you're not familiar with the series--start with #1. Really. This storyline is not going to satisfy properly unless you follow the story from chapter one. It's a great ride, and you want to start from "Go!"

Now that the arc of the war series is done, I am crazy curious to see where the saga goes next. (And I keep hoping to hear more about Frau Totenkinder and her mysterious witchy ways, as well as more about all of the thirteenth floor's sorcerous inhabitants.)

This series deserves every award it's gotten. Thumbs way up!

Mir

The Upcycle: Beyond Sustainability--Designing for Abundance, by William McDonough, Michael Braungart

From the authors of Cradle to Cradle, we learn what's next: The Upcycle

The Upcycle is the eagerly awaited follow-up to Cradle to Cradle, one of the most consequential ecological manifestoes of our time. Now, drawing on the green living lessons gained from 10 years of putting the Cradle to Cradle concept into practice with businesses, governments, and ordinary people, William McDonough and Michael Braungart envision the next step in the solution to our ecological crisis: We don't just use or reuse and recycle resources with greater effectiveness, we actually improve the natural world as we live, create, and build.
For McDonough and Braungart, the questions of resource scarcity and sustainability are questions of design. They are practical-minded visionaries: They envision beneficial designs of products, buildings, and business practices―and they show us these ideas being put to use around the world as everyday objects like chairs, cars, and factories are being reimagined not just to sustain life on the planet but to grow it. It is an eye-opening, inspiring tour of our green future as it unfolds in front of us.
The Upcycle is as ambitious as such classics as Rachel Carson's Silent Spring―but its mission is very different. McDonough and Braungart want to turn on its head our very understanding of the human role on earth: Instead of protecting the planet from human impact, why not redesign our activity to improve the environment? We can have a beneficial, sustainable footprint. Abundance for all. The goal is within our reach.

From Booklist
With their landmark work on designing zero-waste merchandise, Cradle to Cradle (2002), architect McDonough and chemist Braungart launched a revolutionary program that encourages manufacturers to substitute environmentally unfriendly products with those that generate as few toxic footprints as possible. In consulting for corporations as far afield as Ford and Nike, the pair has demonstrated that nonpolluting goods, from carpets to shoes, can win consumers over without sacrificing the bottom line. Now the authors take their sustainability philosophy an inspired step further, arguing that industries can do better than simply trimming down the garbage and instead become “part of the natural cycle of regeneration on the planet.” Drawing on multiple examples from nature’s endless food chain, where one creature’s waste becomes nutrition for others, McDonough and Braungart debunk the notion that ecological measures inevitably steal profits from business and joy from life. The authors’ many reports on industry innovators give readers a peek into a future where mankind might one day stop destroying the environment and, instead, add to its abundance. --Carl Hays

Review

“Asking how a cherry tree would design an energy-efficient building is only one of the creative ‘practices' that McDonough and Braungart spread before their readers. This book will give you renewed hope that, indeed, ‘it is darkest before the dawn.'” ―Carl Pope, executive director of the Sierra Club on Cradle to Cradle

“[McDonough and Braungart are] masters of holistic environmentalism . . . [They] have a knack for combining big ideas with commonsense practicality, which leaves readers feeling excited about the future.” ―Bruce Barcott, Outside Magazine on Cradle to Cradle

Inspiring....Should be Required Reading for All Members of Humanity
By Ronin
If you are already familiar with the work of Bill McDonough ("BM") and Michael Braungart ("MB", together "BMMB"), then my glowing praise should come as no surprise and you can probably stop reading my review and go get your copy now. As a bioentrepreneur running a company, I am well read on current thinking involving sustainability, biomimicry, biology, and futurism. All the same I just checked out and devoured this book in a day. My high expectations were not disappointed, and the marathon read spurred my creativity not just in business but all the way through the cycle down to my family life, which was the intention.

In 1992 BMMB publicly presented the "Hannover Principles", a sustainability manifesto which advocates transcending basic design principles by also considering the impact on health and the environment, how the design impacts things on the periphery and identifying those relationships, eliminating waste and optimizing efficiency, and striving to holistically improve the end product. Together they identified and analyzed thousands of industrial materials and produced a ranking system that delineated their qualities along the lines of toxicity and true recyclable sustainability (as opposed to "downcycling", or reusing the materials of a primary product to produce something else with less and less quality/utility in the future). This work led to a major series of high level consultations producing a "butterfly effect" that is positively impacting us all, and will continue to do so ad infinium.

Ten years later they wrote "Cradle to Cradle", which looked at how products could be made better by applying the Hannover Principles, and that doing so would make companies more profitable. I still count Cradle to Cradle as one of the best and most fascinating business books I have read, and this was largely due to the outstanding examples of how major corporations like Ford and Interface were able to make strategic changes that resulted in superior products, less harmful materials, less waste, etc. I refer to it as a business book in part because BMMB do not blame capitalism for all our troubles. Quite the opposite, they profoundly advocate it as an essential engine of progress and correctly illustrate through example (in both books) how an intention or lack of one will dictate a positive or negative outcome.

Rather than rewrite Cradle to Cradle, the authors set out to explain why it exists, which they richly describe as follows, "The goal of The Upcycle is a delightfully diverse, safe, healthy, and just world with clean air, water, soil, and power - economically, equitably, ecologically, and elegantly enjoyed". Ambitious? BMMB suggest that if Cradle to Cradle principles are widely adopted then this would be the result and that the process would be endless through constant improvement; a true "Virtuous Cycle".

In the 10-years following Cradle to Cradle, BMMB have had continuous forward momentum putting these principles into practice not just with major global corporations, but even with governments like China (who desperately need this help, for the sake of our entire biosphere). As such, BMMB have enjoyed a unique position working with and influencing powerful global forces and driving them towards positive progress. "The Upcycle" reflects this refined experience. It is a call to action for all of society to become conscious not just of what they design and produce, but also of how their decisions on consumption affect waste or produce toxicity, and that our choices thus affect future generations and indeed our planet. It asks us to consider not just how we can do a little here or there producing a "less bad" impact, but instead to analyze and discover how we can improve our habits and become a true force of positive impact. A simple example of putting this into practice is to begin zero consumption of products made by companies that fail to adopt these practices, thus depriving them of any economic reward (I haven't given fast food a single penny since 1989, nor do I patronize certain airlines or banks). When we empower ourselves and hold them accountable they are forced to change or they will disappear, and either outcome is a positive result.

There are many ideas present that will inspire business managers and leaders to consider how they can optimize their processes and designs, and thus is arguably the best $15 you could spend on unleashing your creativity by challenging how you do things from the bottom to the top. As it is intended, it is no less valuable for everyone else as it teaches us to have higher expectations of industry, society, and ourselves. The Forward is by Bill Clinton who says the Optimist's glass is half full, the Pessimist's is half empty, while BMMB's glass is always full of half water and half air. Classic.

Just as Cradle to Cradle was printed according to the best available practices of the time, The Upcycle's concepts were employed in printing this non-toxic biodegradable book to the highest standards of today; once again very cool. I'm looking forward to reading it again, which is rare.

Enjoy!

Cradle to Cradle, release 2.0
By Chuck in Sedona
C2C and The Upcycle

William McDonough, an American architect, and Michael Braungart, a German chemist, combined to write Cradle to Cradle (C2C). C2C, published in 2002, discusses product design, with emphasis on materials utilization efficiency in an environmental context. C2C proposes that product design consider negative effects, especially toxicity, to humans and the natural world at every step in the product's value chain, including disposition when the product is no longer useful. In essence, C2C goes beyond "cradle to grave" design, which ends at a landfill or an incinerator, to "cradle to cradle" design, where non-toxic materials are reclaimed, recycled or reused in generation after generation of products.

Recently, the same two authors published The Upcycle. The Upcycle isn't really a sequel to C2C. Rather, as its title implies, it is an expansion on C2C, based on experience -- in this case, two decades of experience. Think of The Upcycle as another generation of the same product, rather like release 1.0 and release 2.0 of a software package.

Here are a few of the key ideas from The Upcycle:

>> More good, rather than less bad: The general approach to environmental impacts and human well-being is to do less bad -- reduce atmospheric emissions, reduce industrial accidents and reduce waste to landfill, for example. The Upcycle asserts that reduction, even reduction to zero, isn't sufficient. Production should aim beyond shrinking its negative footprint on the world to producing an increasing positive footprint. Where the term "sustainability" confers a sense of steady state, "upcycle" suggests continuing improvement, product generation over product generation

>> Design as a latchkey to abundance: I bought The Upcycle because of its subtitle: Beyond Sustainability -- Designing for Abundance. The book proposes that design -- tangible product design, as well as process and systems design -- can lead to upcycling, and that an emphasis on upcycling leads away from a world of scarcity to a world of abundance.

>> "Biosphere" vs. "Technosphere": The Upcycle distinguishes between the "biosphere" -- the natural world and its biological cycles -- and the "technosphere" -- the realm of the synthetic. Natural products and natural cycles provide models for design within the technosphere. However, the recovery processes in the two spheres differ significantly, such that mixing natural materials with synthetic materials in the same product may impair upcycling.

>> Regarding toxicity: C2C and The Upcycle both regard toxicity as both cumulative and pernicious. Cradle to cradle design relies on detailed assessment of the potential toxicology of all components of every material used in the manufacture of a product. The level of concern goes well beyond most governmental regulations on toxicity, as they existed at the beginning of the current century.

The Upcycle provides the term "enchanted skepticism", which describes my general reaction to that book. Many of the ideas are fascinating. I'm quite convinced that radical improvements in materials utilization, across product generations, are possible. Recent product and process design innovations in the automobile industry and in building construction present interesting cases in point, although The Upcycle affords little attention to either. However, favorable examples are one thing. Broad practicability across a wide range of manufactured products may be another.

This book needs an 'upcycle' too
By jurisdoc
I'm a fan of the work of McDonough and Brungart, and believe they're on the right track with their important work. Cradle to Cradle, their previous book, hit a home run, IMO. This one, unfortunately, does not--it reads more like a pastiche of repurposed speeches and presentations than an organized progression of information and ideas. That might have been more tolerable if the book itself were more attractive. Unfortunately, though it's been manufactured to the best-available sustainability standards, its typography smacks of low-end word-processing. Differentiation between subheads and text is lacking, margins and indentations are unattractive, and chapter dividers are clumsy. The simplistic graphics add little informational value. Several inserts on pale gray paper, crammed with tiny sans serif typography, are awkwardly interspersed and interfere with the book's flow. Most concerning is that, for a book that concerns science and product engineering, there is no index. This book deserves a design and editing "upcycle" of its own.
