Useful and Meaningful

This was a book the NCTE highlighted as a good source, so I picked it up through Amazon (better price). I have been teaching for over 20 years, and I frequently find many books geared for teachers just rehashing strategies that most of us figure out on our own within the first 3-5 years in the classroom. I was pleased to see that this text offered more than that. Another problem has been the number of texts that focus on what to do in the elementary classroom. This one is very specifically written for secondary English teachers, and the examples of exercises use texts regularly taught in American high schools today.

Besides the different strategies that I can employ to engage reluctant participants or to develop better discussion questions, I think my favorite section was on how I can ask for and give support when working with colleagues to do peer evaluations.

A Solid Collection

Ellen Datlow is among the best editors in the business, and Best Horror of the Year is essentially her annual showcase. With that said, there are stronger and weaker entries here. "It Flows From the Mouth" by Robert Shearman is one of the more bizarre and unsettling entries, and a cryptic one at that. "The Dogs Home" by Alison Littlewood is predictable and conventional, while Laird Barron's "the worms crawl in" is weird even using that author as a metric. "The Atlas of Hell" by Nathan Ballingrud reads like part of a series (which it is), and comes across as somewhat incomplete as a result. "Nigredo" by Cody Goodfellow is an interesting homage to Chambers' Yellow King work. The other one that stood out for me is "Past Reno" by Brian Evenson, which has a fairly haunting atmosphere to it.

Is this the Best Horror of the Year? I'm not sure; I think that there are other works that probably merit entry. But it is a solid collection and worth the price of admission.

Some interesting stories

Enjoyable reading. I liked the mix of stories and authors. Some clunkers, but by and large well worth the time. I quite liked the Atlas of Hell and Shay Corsham Worsted as well as Tread Upon a Brittle Shell. Not too sure about the King in Yellow piece, Nigredo. I will definitely keep going with this series.

About the Author
Karin Stulz has extensive experience in the administrative professional field. Her career at Northern Michigan University began with a variety of full-time administrative professional positions. Karin is now the Assistant Professor-Office Information Systems at Northern Michigan University.

Kellie A. Shumack is an associate professor of instructional technology and a department head in the College of Education at Auburn Montgomery. She has worked as an administrative assistant and has taught at the secondary, community college, and university levels. Kellie has designed numerous college courses in both the online and face-to-face environments. She has authored multiple peer-reviewed journal articles, two textbooks, and several book chapters, and she has presented at over 40 professional conferences. Kellie was awarded the 2012 Auburn Montgomery College of Education Excellence in Teaching Award, received the 2010 Delta Pi Epsilon Outstanding Doctoral Research Award, and maintains a certificate to teach online courses at the postsecondary level.

Dr. Patsy J. Fulton-Calkins' experience in the field is extensive. Her past experience in the workplace includes working as an administrative professional for large corporations for six years. Early in her career, she completed the CPS certification. Her teaching experience includes over 13 years at the university, community college, and high school levels. This book was a great "textbook" style college lesson plan. If you are a good disciplined focused student, then this book is for you. If you are FAIRLY new to construction WITH JUST ENOUGH EXPERIENCE and ambition to take this book and use it as a base for research, GREAT! This book is for you. However, if you are looking for a reference book of "how TO" based on topic with easy-to-read pictures, summaries, etc....then this book may not be for you. This is more of a launching, "Intro to Residential Construction projects level class. :Information was great and served it's purpose for me. Much of the direction of the book was in the way of the business side and mentality of it all. Less of the How-to.

As an Architect, having just read one of the worst, most ignorant and cynical accounts of what it is an architect does and how an architect is engaged in the construction process, I have to give it low marks. Despite the author's many insistings that a good relationship with an architect is important, his actual portrayal of an architect is guaranteed to poison the well and lead to foul relationships. If you want to know how an architect see the construction process, read the "The Architect's Handbook Of Professional Practice". This guy doesn't get it.

If the rest of the book is of such a cynical nature, I won't be back to upgrade the one star.

If you're in the project management or project controls industry, I highly recommend picking up a copy of Derek Graham's book. The detail and coverage of the topic is so complete I'm a bit amazed. If I knew enough about app script to catch every mistake in the example code (seriously?) I wouldn't need this book. I've spent quite some time struggling to work examples only to learn that the book is wrong. So frustrating. I wouldn't recommend this book.

So far so good, but have been severely stalled by a couple of code typo's in the first 4 chapters..

I am using the kindle edition and highlighting each typo and will document each code typo here when finished. Until then If you are following the examples, and something doesn't work just double check the code and consult the documentation.

A struggle

I am a C/C++ programmer looking to break into the Google App world. This is one of a very few books on the subject so I didn't have choices. I found it a struggle to go through this book not least because the examples have mistakes and the author makes assumptions about the Google knowledge of the readers. Elsewhere, the texts are not coherent. Example: "You will need a Google Site to complete this example. Both are provided in Google Apps so you are already setup." The first sentence refers to an object "a Google Site". The second refers to two objects "Both". I also had to Google for Google Site and Google Apps to see what the author meant by putting them in this context.

Now, I did struggle through all the obstacles and were now on page 51. So the problems are not insurmountable. However, having paid full price for this small book I was expecting a much higher quality product. Then again, bleeding-edge books are prone to revisions. I hope subsequent revisions will be of higher quality.
