About the Author

Buie Harwood, FIDEC, Honorary FASID, Certified Interior Designer in Virginia; Professor Emeritus and past Department Chair, Department of Interior Design, School of the Arts, Virginia Commonwealth University (for programs in Richmond and Doha, Qater). Ms. Harwood has held officership and committee responsibilities in the Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC), National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ), American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), and Foundation for Interior Design Education Research (FIDER; now called the Council for Interior Design Accreditation/CIDA). Among her many honors, she is an IDEC Fellow, received the first ASID Educator of Distinction Award in 2003, and is listed in Who's Who in Interior Design, the International Directory of Distinguished Leadership, and Who's Who Among America's Teachers. She has received numerous grants, published articles, and implemented research projects related to her historic research and the interior design career path. She is co-author (with B. May and C. Sherman) of Architecture and Interior Design, through the 18th century: An Integrated History, which won the prestigious ASID Education Foundation/Joel Polsky award in 2002, and their second volume, Architecture and Interior Design, from the 19th century: An Integrated History which was published in June 2008. Her book, Decorating Texas: Decorative Painting in the Lone Star State from the 1850s to the 1950s, won awards from the American Association of State and Local History and the San Antonio Conservation Society. She has studied in the Victorian Society Summer Schools at both Rhode Island and England.

 

Bridget May, Ph.D, IDEC, ASID; Professor and former Chair of Interior Design, School of Arts and Sciences, Marymount University. Dr. May has held office and committee responsibilities in the Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC), and been active in the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID). Her many honors include a Benno M. Forman Fellowship for Research in American Material Culture at Winterthur Museum and Library and a one semester sabbatical at Marymount University. She has been listed in Who's Who in Interior Design and Who's Who in American Women. She has had many presentations, publications, and grants related to historic interiors, including one for a furnishings plan for a National Trust Historic Preservation house as well as a 2008 IDEC Special Projects Grant for a design history symposium (with John Turpin). She is co-author (with B. Harwood and C. Sherman) of Architecture and Interior Design, through the 18th century: An Integrated History, which won the prestigious ASID Education Foundation/Joel Polsky award in 2002, and their second volume, Architecture and Interior Design, from the 19th century: An Integrated History which was published in June 2008. She has studied at the Victorian Society Summer School in Rhode Island and at the Winterthur Summer Institute in Delaware.

 

Curt Sherman, FIDEC, ASID; Professor Emeritus, Department of Art and Design, College of Visual and Performing Arts, Winthrop University. Mr. Sherman has held officership/committee responsibilities in the Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC), American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), and Foundation for Interior Design Education Research (FIDER/now called the Council for Interior Design Accreditation/CIDA), and has given numerous ASID and IDEC workshops. Three interior design programs in universities were accredited under his chairmanship. Among his many honors, he is an IDEC Fellow and is listed in Who's Who in Interior Design. He has won prestigious awards for his photography and furniture design, and has had his photography work included in several publications, including books on historic interiors. He is co-author (with B. Harwood and B. May) of Architecture and Interior Design, through the 18th century: An Integrated History, which won the prestigious ASID Education Foundation/Joel Polsky award in 2002, and their second volume, Architecture and Interior Design, from the 19th century: An Integrated History which was published in June 2008. He has also worked on several historic interiors projects and studied at the Attingham Summer School in England as well as programs sponsored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Smithsonian Institute.

Service, price, and delivery are great, book is weak.

The book was delivered on time, and the service was great, but the book itself has some issues.

The book often concentrates more on exterior architectural styles than interior design, or even interior architecture for that matter. I had made a joke at the beginning of the semester about how architecture students should take an interior design course, because we study exteriors so much more than interiors. The joke was that "Every architecture book I've ever had has photos of Palladio's Villa Rotunda, but I've never seen a photo of the interior. Well, you can throw this book in the same pile, because we have photos of the Villa Rotunda, but none from the inside.

There are mistakes, which is off-putting. On page 49, there is a labeled diagram of the Ionic Order. Both of the mouldings labelled "cyma reversa" are cyma rectas. It wouldn't be a big deal, but they're defined on the very next page (A cyma reversa is a concave moulding with a convex moulding above it, and a cyma recta is a convex moulding with a concave moulding above it.)

On page 65, there is a reconstruction of the Roman Forum. The view is from the center of the forum, looking towards the Capitoline hill. It's labelled "Forum, Basilica, and Market of Trajan." Not only are the markets of Trajan not in the picture, they're actually quite far away from the center of the Roman Forum. The markets of Trajan are on the other side of the imperial fora, on the northern end of the Forum of Trajan. Trajan's markets are really really not in the illustration.

There are lots of little sloppy mistakes in the book, and the notes and powerpoints that come with the book to be used in the class are redundant, ambiguous, and sometimes contradictory.

I'd like to reiterate, the seller is great. And the price for the book was really good too. I always check a variety of sites' prices before ordering. The book is somewhat weak though.

This is a decent textbook, fairly well-written and logical. Architecture and Interior Design across the centuries is a huge topic, so it's tough to criticize. But in some chapters, the wording seems as if it could be interchangeable when describing hallmarks of style. If you're purchasing this textbook for a required course, enjoy it; if for your own resource, look a little further.

Dry with bad photography

I needed this book for class. It is informative, but very dry. Some images are beautiful and crystal clear and some are really poor quality and pixelated. Just look at the cover images, the one on the left is perfect and the right one is super fuzzy.

You must read this great book!!!

If you believe in freedom, you will love this book. I feel an affinity with the people of Ukraine. They are struggling to keep their independence and we in the USA must support them. This author tells the truth which is not heard in the mainstream news. She does a great job in this short book which can be read in an hour or two.

Review – My Ukraine

“My Ukraine” is an indepth, very personal analysis of the last 30 odd years of Ukraine history. The author is an experienced, respected western journalist who came herself from the Ukraine. She has relatives still living in the Ukraine. The story is told with passion and heart felt anguish. The book is solid in its history, complete in its coverage of the facts. The author obviously loves her home country and is very bothered by the recent developments there. She is obviously anti Russian and makes this biases clear early on in the book. In spite of this biases, she manages to present a well written, very readable analysis of the situation there over the last 30 odd years.

I highly recommend this book for anyone wishing to better understand the current situation in the Ukraine.

Very Good Book

This book was written by pioneering metal detector engineers who work for, or have worked for, major metal detector manufacturers. Especially considering that it's a technical book written by certified geeks for other certified geeks it is extremely well written and readable, and frequently funny and entertaining. The authors present information with a very human touch and electronic engineers and hobbyists alike can benefit from it.

This book thoroughly covers all of the metal detecting technologies, from BFO to Pulse Induction, search coil design, and just about everything relating to metal detector design and even construction details.

If I had to point out a shortcoming or make a suggestion it would be that the authors were maybe too thorough and spent a few pages debunking dowsing, which in my opinion was a waste of paper. However, that is only a few pages I'm critical of out of the 282 pages in this book and that's only because as part of this review I felt obligated to find a real or imagined fault somewhere in this great work.

Clearly not for everyone, but it's a must-have for hobbyists who are building their own detectors and a should-have for anyone with a serious interest in metal detectors or electronics in general.

ALMOST MORE THAN YOU WANT TO KNOW

This book is filled with classic analog circuits of the sort many Forrest Mims fans grew up with. A careful study of this book will reveal the inside secrets of the metal detector industry with perhaps a slight bit more emphasis on the Tesoro designs (regarded by many to be amongst the best detectors). The math is easy, almost too easy for the average EE, but may be a bit much for some technicians not well grounded in electronics theory. In general I found the book enjoyable and fairly thorough with regards to analog circuitry involved and its integration into the overall MD design. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an electronics background interested in MD subcircuits and integrated packages. A five star colaberative effort between George Overton and Carl Mooreland! Certainly a great education and starting point for those interested in building their own detectors or experimenting with their circuits and components.

This book met and exceeded my expectations. It does a great job walking you through the basics of coils, vlf, and pi circuits. It also has a great appendix which lists tons of patents and papers if and when you want to go deeper into the rabbit hole.

Good for review if you have been cursed with JSL

For those of you with the extreme misfortune of having to use Eleanor Jorden's abysmal text (Jorden's Solipsistic Language), this book may save your grade. It contains all of the grammar covered in first year Japanese. Furthermore, all examples are given in hiragana/katakana/kanji, with a romanji and an English translation. In other words, although this is a grammar survey, it also provides you with the reading practice that you'll need in order to achieve any degree of fluidity in Japanese. Cover up the English and the romanji lines and see how much you can read. You won't get all of the kanji, but even reading everything around the kanji will help you, and the more you see kanji, the less strange they seem. You will pick some up just from the frequency with which they appear. As for the grammar explanations: they are both concise and self-sufficient, just what a beginner needs. Finally, the book provides answers to all exercises, an often neglected feature of texts written by egomaniacs such as Eleanor Jorden. Buy this book if you want a clear and straightforward Japanese grammar book that offers exercises and solutions, in addition to reading practice and an easy to use index and table of contents.

Great Basic Grammar Guide

Technically, this is a cram guide for College students studying japanese for courses. But it makes an ideal companion for people living in Japan who are learning a lot of words through osmosis, but need a little help with the grammar to help them structure what they know and take their Japanese to a basic level.

I used this book to help me with my grammar within 6 months of arriving in Japan, and it helped me make the leap from being able to make single to triple word declarations in Japanese, to being able to speak in full sentences, and helped put me on the road to fluency. It shows you how to form basic sentences (for example comparisons "X is bigger than Y" etc) in a simple, straightforward manner. Since it's an outline of the most fundamental grammar, all of it is highly relevant and useful, with no filler.

One thing though- As useful as it is for beginners, since it only covers fundamental elementary grammar, good students will quickly outgrow it. Once finished with it I would recommend "A Dictionary of Intermediate Japanese Grammar" by Seiichi Nakino and Michio Tsutsui, also available here on amazon.

By the way- the reviewer below is right about "Wo" not being a mistranslation. It's a standard, if confusing way to spell it. You need to

type "wo" to get that particle if you're typing in Japanese on a web browser or microsoft word, for example.

good value for money

I bought this book a few months ago as it seemed to explain most of the essential points of Japanese grammar as well as provide exercises to test your understanding. At my local foreign language book shop, there was a plethora of Japanese language books to choose from but some only skimmed the surface where as others were great slab-like enclyclopaedias which should have come with a warning "contents under extreme pressure".
The book is divided into fifteen chapters and covers subjects such as adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, particles, conjunctions, verbs, conditional clauses, interrogative words, nominalization, honorific expresssions etc etc. The last chapter is particularly good because it illustrates several commonly used japanese expressions. There are nicely varied examples (written in english, romaji and kanji/kana) in every chapter with corresponding exercises and answers(great!).
Sure there were a few typos and dubious answers but i'm sure they will be edited when the next edition comes out. To tell you the truth, they didn't bother me much at all.
I would have given this book another half star if particles were explained in greater depth but that probably would have doubled the book's thickness.
Overall, a good buy

Amazing

This book is really good! I love Connie's writing style. This book is about the stages in our walk with God all the way till maturity. She uses the book of Nehemiah as a study to describe our stages of growth in the Kingdom. She describes the different stages in life such as falling in love with our shepherd Jesus, and second stage of sharing the good news of what has transpired in our lives because of King Jesus. He he he and going deeper in God this is really amazing. Knowing God and his amazing ways. Then her teachings on enduring the trials how God can use trials to shape us and transform us and to grow. If we hold on to him we will see him bring breakthrough. Getting our characters refined by God by knowing him more in the trials we go through. After coming from the valley the Holy Spirit fills us up and refreshes us. Then we start feasting on the word of God. Reading the word of God which brings strength, encouragement, direction, instruction and cleansing in our lives. Being filled through the rhema word of God. Then the horse gate doing warfare. After being equipped by God we are destined for success in everything through Jesus. Wow my favourite chapter was on worship and praising God and how that changes the atmosphere and brings miracles, healings and deliverance. The last stage God takes us to the place that he has designed for us and destined for us to be. Were we receive assignments from the lord. Wow I loved this book. This is the best book on the study of Nehemiah that I have read and I intend to read it over and over again.

Inspiring, Encouraging and Educating

Connie brilliantly lays out a map of our Christian journey simplifying and revealing profound insight to God's heart through her pursuit in unraveling the gates in the book of Nehemiah.
This is a solid study that could be used in small groups, bible studies, as well as for the individual hungry to grow in God and stay the course. Our path is so often longer with hiccups and hurdles and not the least bit comfortable at times, that understanding the process (and God's discipline, not punishment) can strengthen us for the tests that can ultimately take us out by way of skepticism or discouragement, thus overwhelming us before we realize our purpose.

About the Author
CHRIS CHARLTON's first introduction to Japanese wrestling was on a shaky VHS copy of the 1994 Super J Cup. Five years after that viewing, he moved to Japan, where he has lived for the past decade. Immersed in the wrestling culture, Chris trained in the UK, where he wrestled for Midlands Pro Wrestling and NWA: UK Hammerlock. In Japan, he wrestled for various small independents before realising his talents were perhaps best served away from the ring. Since 2012, he has co-hosted Live Audio Wrestling's monthly Japanese podcast with WH Park, as well as commentating extensively on videogames and sub cultures at kaijupop.com. Chris currently lives in Yokohama with his wife and son. This is his first book.

Excellent book.

Excellent book. I subscribed to Kindle Unlimited just to read this book, and it was awesome. As someone who just started watching NJPW with WrestleKingdom 9, it was a great history of the company. Would be interested in a physical copy if price (currently $35 price tag) goes down at some point. Definitely would read again.

Excellent history and cirque of an iconic promotion

A long time wrestling fan from the 1970s onward, ice been aware of NJPW, mostly through their cooperative work with NWA/WCW and ROH. As such, my familiarity was vague at best, so reading a more in depth explanation and history was something both entertaining and educational.

Written in a very easy to read style, this book covers both the positive and negatives of the company, its various experiments and highs and lows. Highly recommend to ask wrestling fans.

This book might be one of the easiest and funest reads I have had in a long time. Once I picked uo the book it was hard to out down. The author does a great job at telling the history of NJPW. As a new comer to NJPW I found this book very helpful. I recommend this to anyone looking to get into New Japan or any fan of wrestling in general. I love this book.

About the Author
St. Pio of Pietrelcina was born as Francesco Forgione in 1877 at Pietrelcina, Italy. At the age of five he reportedly decided to dedicate his life to God, becoming a novice of the Capuchin Friars ten years afterward with the customary vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. He received Holy Orders in 1910, and subsequently served many of the faithful as a spiritual director. Though he suffered a great deal both spiritually and physically, he always remained firm in the confidence of Jesus, Mary, and his Guardian Angel. Padre Pio was also a famed Stigmatist, and died on the twenty-third of September, 1968. He was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2002, and his feast is celebrated on the twenty-third of September.

A Book I Hold Dear to My Heart

Padre Pio is someone I revere deeply. This book is divine. It has helped me through hard times. Many times, I seek help from the book by communicating my troubles to Padre Pio. For 2 years I suffered from a terrible affliction and yesterday, after hearing about the death of a close one, I felt so consumed that I held the book close to my heart. Had I known that my husband's cousin was suffering this much, I would have prayed for him but no one told me. At about 2-3 in the morning, I got up to use the washroom and touched the lump but there was none. It was just not possible because I have suffered for so long quietly that my husband did not even know. I was so shocked that all I wanted to do was run to wake my husband and share my joy but he was so sound asleep. Yes, this book is divine and this is not the only time my prayers were answered. It has happened before. There is something miraculous about the pictures and the sight of the stigmata.

I just wanted to share what this book has done for me and hope it helps all those who draw their inspiration from Padre Pio. Only 2 weeks ago, I was consumed by a heavy lily scent in the garage and did not know where it came from then this healing happened, so yes, he is there!

Sweet and poignant

The size of a pocketbook, this booklet is easy introduction to any number of things, Padre Pio himself, our Immaculate Mother, or our Catholic Faith. Having been born into a traditional Hispanic Catholic family, I take for granted the reverence and honor due to our Immaculate Mother. Non-believers can judge for themselves what to make of our devotion to her, in reading Padre Pio's long and beautifully composed meditation. I was made ashamed by my lack of devotion. This meditation for Our Lady shows instantly how deep and rich his faith is, in her for her unique role in our salvation. She who was most pure, most chaste, and full of grace - The Women deemed worthy enough since the fall of Eve to inflesh the Lord's Loving Mercy in Jesus Christ for the salvation and sanctification of our souls, does truly disserve to be honored and loved for her role in our salvation. "Hail Mary full of grace, the Lord is with thee..." said the archangel in greeting her whilst expressing the will of the Lord to her. She could have said no, but she conceded and in her womb was conceived our salvation. That is what Padre Pio brings into our understanding in this beautiful mediation. After reading it, you leaf through page after page of black and white photographs, many depicting his stigmatization, others depict his reverence for the Eucharist which for Catholics believers means the transubstantiation of the body of Christ, in all however you observe a deep love of Christ. A most devoted Cappuchin Priest, his memory for us lives on in this brief booklet. Let it be your introduction to this pious man.

Ruth Wallach is the head of the Architecture and Fine Arts Library at the University of Southern California. She is the previous author of Miracle Mile in Los Angeles: History and Architecture and has researched and written extensively on the history of the built environment in Los Angeles.
